On a tugboat, what is the "thing" called where they attach it to other boats/barges/docks. I have always called it a tie-off, and I'm sure thats not the real name for it. Most of the ones I have seen look similar to # minus the lower horizontal line. I have googled for a while now and I just have no idea on what it is called or where else to find this out.
Thanks

The bollard is on the pier the bitts are on the ship/ boat and the line is probably a hawser, possibly a cable. However being a brown shoe I hope a deck ape will chime in.

Thanks Guys, Bitts it is. I hate calling diferent objects "things" lol.
Are there any detail kits or PE sets in 1:350 that have Bitts? I am working on a 1:350 model and it lacks detail, mainly Bitts, railing, doors, windows and other deck details.
Thanks again!

And Luke, you just stick with calling those other "things" to be "doors". Because every real sailor knows that " doors go through bulkheads and hatches go through decks".

It sounds plenty salty to call any watertight fitting a hatch, but you just remember that the door goes through a bulkhead and the chief won't give you any grief. And this First LT won't, either.

I will work on my sailor vocab here a little, here in KY we just don't have the oppertunity to use these terms enough. I guess I'm needing some hatches as well
Found a few PE sets on Toms model works but have still to find Bitts. Also in Dave's tug build, there is a real nice "winch" on the deck. (is that the correct term?) Do they make something like this in 1/350?
Thanks again

Maybe you are asking about a winch, if it is for a working shlip like a freighter or something with big booms and derricks above. There may be one winch in site near the davits for the boats, or there may not, depending on the ship you are modeling. Otherwise, it would just be a cable reel. Ships will have several cable reels around the decks. There are several aftermarket cable reels available.

And remember, doors go through bulkeads (walls) and hatches go through decks (floors).

Luke,

Check with Harry over at "battlefleetmodels.com" I believe he has that in 1/350.

I saw his winches, but assumed that they were 1:700 scale... It does not list what scale his Accessory's are. Are they 350?
Thanks

I seem to remember that someone had listed some nautical phrases in a previous thread on site.
Try a search (top right hand corner) of the site and see what comes up.

Luck,

Harry let me know the winches are 1/700 but the bollards and bits will work with 1/350.

Cool, thanks! I may try scratchbuilding a winch based off the photos from Dave's tug build.

I am curious which 350 scale kit doesn't have bits either molded on or to glue on. I can't get the picture to come up, but I assume bits are where you tie off the hawser from the ship to the dock. Of course, I have only built injection molded kits from Tamiya, Trumpeter, and now Hasegawa and all of them have this feature. Never have built a resin kit.

Winch, capstan, windlass, hoist and davits. Sailors do have a language of their own and consider all the many different ways to rig any of them.

Hi Frank, Luke,

I will put the scale on my accessories page.
The Bollards are an assortment that can be used on 1/350 ~ 1/700
There are over 100 bollards of various sizes in this set.
The winches are 1/700.
I have had quite a few requests for 1/350 winches, but it will be a while as orders keep pouring in, and I have very little time at the moment for new items.

Sorry, for any confusion,
Harry

Hi Frank, Luke...
Harry

Hi H!

I'm glad you picked up on this one...

The way that I see it. as ship modelers, we all have alot of patience.
If we want a quality casting, then it's worth the weight, in resin quality, and a good build...
