A big hello from landlocked Westbury, Wiltshire, England

After many years building winged things (quite a lot), heavy metal things (one or three) and figures (mostly), I've finally decided to give shipbuilding a go. I hope that over the coming months (and longer) I can contribute to this great site.

I've seen many beautiful maritime creations either here, elsewhere on-line and at the many shows I attend (as a fig builder/ painter) here in sunny South West England. So, it was almost inevitable that I'd give in to temptation and take the plunge, which is a mighty big step for a cavalryman; will my horses get wet?

Any way, I've slowly essembled a small flotilla of kits and supporting reference sources to cut my teeth on - the aged Heller KGV and Airfix Belfast.

I've also bought the Airfix Z Class destroyer to practise on BUT (and here's the request) my example doesn't have any instructions! Whilst I'm confident that I can put the basic superstructure together based on my references; the AA batteries, rader array and mast present a slight problem.

So can any of my fellow shipmates help me out with a copy of Airfix's Z (Narvik) Class destroyer instructions? I am very grateful of any help with this matter.

Many thanks in advance

Karol

Ahoy Karol, and Welcome to ModelShipwrights, mate!

Always a pleasure to see another shipbuilder join the ranks...although I don't have a copy of the instructions on hand now, gimme a chance to do some digging around and I might have some success...in the meantime, who knows, someone else may just come to the rescue!

Cheers,
~Gunny

You'll sure see your request atended - just give it a little time!
I hope you enjoy your new challenge, you'll get hooked for sure.

Hi Karol,

You might try to contact Airfix. Their new website is up and running.
They have always been helpful in the past, for me.

Also, you might try Tony at Dorking models. He has been building ships for years. Phone # +44 (0)1306 881747 .

Gunny, Skipper and Harry

Thanks for the welcome - I'm sure looking forward to making some new friends here.

Harry - I'll certainly keep your suggestion in mind - I'll wait and see if anyone can me help me here first. Many thanks.

I'm hoping to get going on the destroyer in the next week or so - if I do, I'll try and post my progress here (if that's okay!).

Cheers Shipmates

Karol

Welcome to our site. Unfortuneatly I have never built the kit or I would have instructions for it. Sometimes you can find them on archives of model instructions. Best bet is to contact Airfix and they can FAX you or mail you a set. You might try asking on some of the other ship websites like Steelnavy or Modelwarships and see if anyone there has a set they can copy for you.

Hey Karol,

Airfix used to have a feature where you could download the instructions.

Guys

Thank you once again for the warm welcome.

Al - we keep running into each other everywhere!

The Z Class destroyer is slowly easing itself closer to my cutting mat...

Unfortunately, I'm really busy with work over the next few days, so I'm going to hold fire on my pursuit of the missing instructions until I get some more time.

If anyone out there in the ether stumbles across a set they will be very gratefully received! Failing that a large scale diagram of the front superstructure, mast and radar array would probably be enough for me to work out where everything goes.

Cheers

Karol

Hi Guys

I thought that I'd close this thread with some very good news.

At the end of last week I finally got around to contacting Airfix requesting a new set of instructions - less than a week later they pinged over a pdf'ed set. Fantastic!!!

A big thank you to Airfix - outstanding customer support.

Thanks also to WEM for such a fast turnaround on the PE sets I'm going to use on the Z Class destroyer - thankfully they got to me ahead of the postal strike.

Anyway, I hope to make a real start on this destroyer over the weekend. Pictures to follow soon.

Cheers

That's great news, mate!
Now you're ready to jump in head-first, and get busy...if you want to Karol, you can start a seperate thread, as a "BLOG" (Build Log) and document your build as you go, like THIS ONE...up to you, mate, either way, looking forward to seeing your work!
Cheers,
~Gunny

Cheers Gunny

That sounds like a great idea - will hopefully get cracking on the build tomorrow; blog to follow.

Cheers

Karol
