hello all,
this is just a thought, has there been a campaign for predreadnought ships.the time period would be 1890-1906.on a hobby store site there is 6 differant russian predreadnought ships.i have researched and found 10-12 other kits.with all the campaigns starting or will start, this might be a nice campaign for the winter of 2008.with the elections going on this might be a good distraction.just think a ship with 4 12inch guns,6 9.2 inch guns, and other smaller calibure guns.this is a "how about"
cheers,
Bruce

What are the "10-12 other ships?" In plastic, which is what is mostly done in the campaigns, I can only think of the Russian ships you mention, and the Japanese Mikasa. I was thinking along the same lines, but I was thinking maybe making it up to WW1. That would allow the Revell Emden, and the ICM German Koenig class BBs, maybe others.

hello Rodger,
i found the USS Virginia,Oregon, and Olympus in a plastic model.i am not an expert in this area, just thought to put out a "how about".i did a search out for predreadnought ships + model ships and found some,from1/250-1200.maybe some one with more knowledge eill be able to take it from here.
ther are some on the iron shipwright site, but lots of $$$'s so maybe up to the start of ww1. what do you think.
cheers,
Bruce

A pre-Dreadnought campaign is a fabulous idea...there are many possibilities here, in plastic, as well as resin, (quite affordably, as well)...this is an era of shipbuilding that absolutely fascinates me, and would make for a very interesting future campaign idea here at MSW...

I would go for this one (also)!

Apart from Hasegawa, Revell, Zvezda, Seals Models and Heller injection kits, there are a lot of resin manufacturers that make top notch models, and if you're going to 1/700 scale they are not that expensive!
The only problem is the rigging of these beauties

Darn you guys. Stop coming up with so many good ideas.

I too like the idea of the pre-dreadnaught ships. I have had my eye on a USS Olympia or USS Illinois for some time. It depends on when this might run, but for now I will say yes.

Bruce,
You can handle it. You just have to set the details of the build and go from there. Since this is pre-dreadnought the end date is easy, 1906. Just pick a good round number for a start date and go from there. If you are looking for later this year you will have plenty of time to do research. I think you can do it. Its a piece of cake.

Ahoy Bruce

Now I would truly love to think that the superbly crafted instalments about The Great White Fleet in the Chartroom inspired this campaign idea but alas I fear not....

On a far more more serious note anyone who has taken the time to read the instalments I have and are continuing to compile will know I am an absolute sitter to join this campaign.

Bruce if you want some information (or just pure inspiration) about pre Dreadnoughts and the Great White Fleet have a preuse thru the instalments. As far as reference go many of the US Battleships and Cruisers of the era have been profiled.

Just one small point I would love for someone to set out the manufacturers and scales of options available to build.

So count me in.

Cheers

Sean,

I knew you'd be on board sometime. Your series has been full of great info and will help out in a few build I can assume.

Thanks for the kind words Jim.

I have the Emden ready to build so if Rodgers suggestion was accepted that would be great.

However in saying that if someone would be so kind as to suggest to me a suitably available kit matching my skills either in 1/700 or 1/350 it would be great. It may benefit myself and others.

Cheers

Bruce,
Looks like you might be running this over here while bakcing up the Blitz Campaign over in Armor.

I am going to tear into a USS Illinois, BB7. I will have to same my nickels and dimes for a while to get that bad boy.

There will be plenty of help from your shipmates so don't worry!

Anybody know who would make a USS Louisiana BB19? She was a Connecticut class battleship.

ISW makes a Connecticut and I saw one fo those, but I cannot remember where I saw it. Too much surfing, not enough book marking.

I like the U.S.S. Michigan BB-27 but since they want 265 for it I may need the long time period to save for it....

Oh King,

Here's my pretended built

Protected Cruiser "D. Carlos" 1898~1920

It was named after the Portuguese King of the time, and after the regicide and the implantation of the Portuguese Republic was renamed "NRP Almirante Reis"
She's an Elswick Cruiser

Well I guess I'll have plenty of time to decide. Decisions, decisions. I've got the Eastern Express 1/350 Knyaz Suvorov already. The 1/350 Mikasa has always intrigued me, but I don't know if I want to buy any more ships until I get a bit better at doing the ones I have. The Glencoe USS Oregon is also intriguing, but at $34.00 for a re-release or a re-release etc, etc, of a 50 plus year old kit might be a bit much.

I'll have plenty of time to make up my mind.
