Hi all

Finally got finished my latest project
Tamiya's 1/700 Waterline German Cruiser "Gneiseanu" just in time for Scale Model World in Telford .

Again I used a piece of polystyrene cut with a saw to give it an uneven look.
I then marked the hull on the base and used liquid glue to melt it and put the ship into the base and ran a layer of PVA glue down either side of the hull.
Once dry I added some more PVA around the bow and brushed a layer on the base to seal it.
When dry painted the water effect with a touch of white for the waves.
Sealed with a layer of clear and when dry put into frame.
Hardest part was again the aireal wires made from my daughters hair (off her hairbrush honest! )

Hope you like it

Can be seen with my other ship Graf Spee also at Telford

Looks very nice, especially the water. It might just be the color on my monitor, or the picture, but the red of the swastika looks a bit reddish orange, instead of the vivid red of the Nazi flag.

BTW, technically the Gneisenau was rated as a battleship, schlachtschiffe, not a cruiser, or even a battlecruiser. She was small, and fairly lightly armed, but she was a battleship.

Hi Rodger

Thanks for the reply.
The cross is actually said to be black on a white background but didn't have the decals with the kit and therefore it doesn't have the flag on the rear either.
It was taken off a decal sheet for a 1/72 kit I found in my decal box .
I thought it was a battleship as well but the nameplate with it says battle cruiser.
It's also the sister ship of the "Scharnhorst" which is a battleship

Many people call The Twins, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, battlecruisers, but my one source of information, "Battleships and Battlecruisers 1905-1970" list them as battleships. A BC gives up armor for speed but there was nothing wrong with these ships armor. Their guns were just much smaller, 11" compared to 14", 15" or 16" like most battleships of their day.

I'm not sure if the Schanrhorst or Gneisenau did the swastica emblem on the ship. In any case, what you did is totally wrong. It should be a red rectange across the deck with a white circle and black swastica. There should also be one on the rear as well. You also painted all the gun tubes and cranes black. These would have been the same color as the rest of the ship ...a light grey. There are some realy great refence books out there with color drawings of the Kreigsmarine ships. One of them is Squadron German Battleships in Action. I have a real old Squadron book called the Kreigsmarine which covered pretty much all the ships involved with color art.

Here is a picture of the Bismarck I did for reference. The tops of the main gun turrets were painted different colors at times like blue, red, yellow, anddark grey. You would jut haveto reference that as to the time you are depicting your ship. There was also some camoflage used once or twice on yours
