Hi Mates,

I'm building my first naval vessel.....Revell's Fishing Trawler....The Arctic Corsair. Actually I'm in the final stages now, and need some help with the Lycra Rigging I have purchased recently from WEM.

What paint do you guys usually use on this thread? and is too dine for a 1/142nd scale ship? Also, do you usually drill holes in masts to pass the rigging thorugh, or do you just tack it with super glue?

Also, do you know of any site which shows the correct rigging on the real thing?

Thanking you in advance, and all the best for the new year to everyone.

Alexei

Well, I don't use the same stuff, but generally I paint my rigging black. I also just glue it to the mast. I have found tthat keeping each section separate also works better. When I was younger, I would use one long piece ruming from stem to stern, but it would always end up with way to much sag in it. As to the scheme, I'ld follow the what I can get out of the deirections or boxart.

Hi Blaster

So what do you usually use for rigging? I've never thought of the sagging, it's a good idea to keep each section separate.

Later I will post some photos of the progress done so far

Ahoy Alexei!

Sorry I missed this post, mate, but I use Lycra thread regularly now from WEM, as the only US vendor that I could find no longer stocks the stuff...

No hole drilling required, just use a good superglue ( I use an accellerator also) to attach the lycra from point to point, keeping taught but not too tight...the lycra has a good spring to it (which makes for an ideal rigging thread), so sagging is not normally an issue...and you can get it in black, but if you have white, I would dye the stuff instead of painting, to avoid loading up the thread too much...stretched sprue is another option, (which hopefully I will have an SBS feature up soon that I'm working on for just this task), but a bit more tricky than Lycra...as far as a site with rigging diagrams, good luck, not much available (but anyone reading this knows of one, please share it! ), but if you hunt down a set of plans for the original, you may be lucky to have a scale rigging diagram to work from...hope this helps, mate, and please keep us posted on your build!

Cheers,
~Gunny

Here are some photos of my build of the fishing trawler.

With regards to the build, being my first model, was rather slow! Didn't have major fit problems, but was afraid of ruining the build at times!! I have scratch-built all the railings (some are still missing on top of the bridge), ladders and hand-rails. I have also reworked the winches and drilled out all the windows in the bridge and the skylights.

I still have some washes on the life boat to do, all the rigging and I was pondering the idea of putting a fishing net on the deck as well, cause it's looking a bit empty!

Please forward your comments and suggestions.

Ahoy Alexei,
Nice job, thus far mate, thanks for sharing the progress with us....so tell me, have you now been bitten by the shipwright bug, since you have built your first naval vessel? (It's VERY contagious! ) Hope so!!!!
Cheers,

Interesting looking model. Good job with the scratch building and the painting. The only thing I could comment on is the bit of a seam gap where you have the deck of the top part of the superstructure mated with the walls of the lower part. I have problems with minor fit all the time. In a lot of cases it is real small like yours. SOmetimes a little extra paint fills it in, sometimes I use thin streched sprue with a liquid glue. When it is really bad like when I did the abomnible Titanic white putty. As to my preference for rigging. On real short sections I like the metal guitar wire. ON sections longer than 6 inches or so, I opt for stretched sprue. Anything over 14 inches I go with black thread.

You can see that I've been bitten, by looking at the background of the photos posted! I've been stocking naval kits now for around two years! I think I have enough to take me through retirement in around 34 years time!!

As soon as I finalise this trawler, I will start weathering the U-Boat Type XXXIII that is seen in the background, and then I have the Tumpeteer Russian Type 956E Destroyer. I will post pics during the build.
