hello all,
i am looking for help for my build of the San Francisco.it is the trumpeter kit 1/350 scale.i am doing an OOB,but i am not sure if the color guild is right.i sent an e-mail to john at whiteensign about the colors to use.

Mark,i would like to do this as a WIP blog,if that is ok with you.i even might see if i can get it done for the forgotten sisters campaign.

any,and all help is welcome.i had to put 80% of my books in storage,so i don't have any books on hand on this ship to help me.
cheers,
Bruce

If you are building the kit out of the box, San Francisco wore Ms 21, overall Navy Blue. That means all vertical surfaces would be painted 5N, Navy Blue. All decks would be 20B, Deck Blue. The underwater section would be Norfolk Anti-Fouling Red, the boot stripe black.

Here's the equivalents in the WEM line:

US 08 5-N NAVY BLUE
US 10 1942 REVISED DECK BLUE 20-B
US 14 NORFOLK 65A ANTI-FOULING RED
C 02 MATT BLACK

Saw your note about building her for the Forgotten Sisters Campaign. I don't want to rain on your parade, but San Francisco might be the best known member of this class, alongside the three sisters sunk at the Battle of Savo Island. But that's a decision for Frank (Wildspear) to make, I'm just offering my opinion.

Good luck with your build.

The San Francisco was a memeber of the New Orleans class which according the rules is the "lead sister". So by the rules, the San Francisco OOB is eligable. I am waiting for a PE set to even consider working on mine. GMM should have theirs out shortly and I think Tom's also is making one.

Martin what would equivalent colors be in Modelmaster enamels. I can figure out the red and black and I have a deck color I use so what is the closest MM color to the 5N navy blue?

Is that the rule? I wasn't sure. Guess I saw "forgotten sister" as more of one that toiled out of the limelight or wasn't as famous as another in the class.

I have to claim ignorance here - I only use WEM colors. Back in the day before WEM colourcoats, I used Humbrol 77 for the 5N on my 1/700 USS Saratoga (CV-3). That looks like a reasonable match to me.

There are also the Classic Warship books, Warship Pictorial #5 USS San Francisco and Warship Pictorial #7 New Orleans Class Cruisers. Unfortunately, both are out of print.

Roll Models carries the line, not sure if they carry the Naval Colors too.

For what it's worth, I order from WEM quite often, via their online shop. They ship quickly (as long as it's in stock), and will ship a single tin, if that is what you need. Yeah, the exchange rate sucks right now, but if you want it quickly...

Bruce,
I bought my WEM paints from Great Models. Not sure if you tired them or not.

I think the storms that are hitting you will be running over here this week, we are looking to get 9 days of rain and cold.

You can also buy WEM paints from ShipCamouflage.com. Best prices in the US!

For what it's worth, San Francisco was originally an Astoria-class cruiser; the class name was changed when Astoria was sunk in 1942.

Other than the figures from L'arsenal, none of the others have been released yet. I think the Dragon will be best bet as the ones I saw in the release thingy all had helmets on which none of the Japanese do.
