I have a few questions regarding Vietnam War era Riverine assault craft in 1/35th scale.
I have heard that the Nimix 'Monitor boat Mk5' is a very poor kit and should be avoided? Is this correct thinking on my behalf?
Are the Masterpiece Models kits of the 'Program 5 Command and Communication Boat' & 'Program 5 'ZIPPO' flamethrower river boat' any good?
I know they're big and pricey but I have wanted to build one of these boats in 1/35th for years.
Any comments or advice on these kits or indeed any other kits I don't know about would be gratefully received.

Ahoy, David,
Welcome to Model Shipwrights, mate!

I can't comment on the Nimix kit, but the boys from Masterpiece Models have got it going on with their Riverine kits, my friend...big and pricey yes, but definitely well worth it!

We just wrapped up the Riverine Military Craft~Indochina/Vietnam Campaign here at MSW, and here's a link to the Official Campaign Thread where you may find some useful info.

And the official Campaign Wrap-up can be found here to see all of the finished entry's...

Cheers,
~Gunny

This is waaaaay beyond my area of expertise, but would the Tamiya PIBBER ( PBR31 Mk.II)fit your needs? I have it in my stash, but have not built it; very reasonable pricing though. Here is a link with some cool pics:

Gunny, thanks for the info and the links shame I didn't check here before I would have joined that campaign like a shot. I have the Tamiya PBR and Dragon LSSC waiting to be made in the stash.
James thanks for the info the shots of the PBR are great and as I say I do have this kit waiting to be made. It's just that I have always wanted to build a 1/35th Monitor and I think I'm going to have to be very nice to my better half so I can be allowed to get at least one of the Masterpiece Models kits, but which one
Thanks once again for the info

Hi
Might help you. I've been to some show's here in the UK run by IPMS & I'm sure that 1 of there SIG groups is a Vietnam group which specialises in Riverine warefare. I've taken some photo's of some of there builds & they are pretty good, from what I can remember from speaking to them most of what they had on display was scatchbuilt & they have a guy that can obtain plans. I was thinking of scratchbuilding a 1/35th scale monitor using the Italeri LCM as the hull awhile back but still only in the planning stage. Check there web site.

Yes, my friend, I can relate!
Personally, the Zippo is a FANTASTIC piece of resin work, and IMHO, would be a fabulous choice from MPM...the thing is HUGE, the kit, well designed, and very well made..........

Shaun,
Thanks for the info, I had a look on the IPMS UK website and although it does list a Vietnam SIG sadly it doesn't have any link to a web page or an email address! I will try emailling the main site and see if there are any details.
Gunny,
The zippo is kind of the favorite with me as well, but they also have a ATC Tango Flat Top Mini 'coming soon!' which would look fantastic with one of the Dragon 1/35th Hueys on the landing deck!
Thanks once again for all the info

I couldn't choose between the two Masterpiece kits so in the end I dug into the savings and ordered both kits! I'm not sure how long they will take to arrive or indeed how long it will take me to get around to building them but I can always do a quick in box review for you if you like?
Thank you to everyone who replied to my questions.
Also thanks for the offer James but I also have the Squadron book "Riverine- A Pictoral History of the Brown Water War in Vietnam".

Well, I guess that if you can't make up your mind.....

That's great news, mate, did you get both the Zippo and the Program 5
Command and Communication Boat?

And aye, I welcome all reviews from our members, David!

Yes Gunny in the end when for both, I just haven't got around to telling the wife yet, I guess she'll find out when they arrive
I was thinking about the price of these kits and in the grand scheme of things they are great value! If you compair it to resin kits of trucks and tanks one kit can be over $100 so for what you get in the Masterpiece kit it's not that bad a price. I know on the Zippo boat you have two flamethrower turrets, Verlinden used to made a resin turret for a M113 conversion and two of those would set you back over $50 at least.

That's very true, and I too agree as well about the price (and the wife ), mate...there is a HUGE amount of resin in these kits, and the workmanship and quality is top notch....keep us posted, David!
