Very nice looking progress. That camo scheme is going to be killer.

July 16: Quick update on the hull painting. I sprayed the last coat this morning (5-N, Navy Blue) and pulled the masking tape. I'm fairly pleased with the result (port side shown to compare with ship photo above).

I'll try and get to the boot topping tomorrow. Have to make a decision soon about whether to mate the two hull sections before continuing with the deck and topsides parts. The upper deck section is closed so I if I mated them, I'd no longer have access to the nuts securing the lower hull to the brass lamp risers. I'm reluctant to grind through the upper hull piece just to get at the nuts. I definitely will need to clamp the upper and lower hull sections together when mating them to compensate for the slight warp, so that would suggest doing it before the upper pieces are attached. Hmmmmm...

July 19: Finished the boot topping and decided to go ahead an mate the two parts of the hull. I put some epoxy around the nuts in the upper hull section in case I need to take the lamp risers out at some point - hope the epoxy stayed on the outside of the nuts. Here is a photo of the starboard side - I modeled the camouflage pattern on the photo of Ellyson in Steve Wiper's book on the Benson/Gleaves class. That photo looks like it must be from about the same time as the photo I have of the port side (posted above). I used black as opposed to flat black paint for the boot topping - it will tone done somewhat when I apply some clear flat after getting the hull markings on.

I've also been doing a lot of pre-painting. I'm coating most everything with haze gray before getting the detail parts assembled. I'm pretty much done with the 5" guns, however. Again, I used the photos to guide the camouflage pattern. I plan on coating them with Future and then a applying a light wash to bring out the nicely molded detail. Here they are as of this morning.

July 22: Well, I'm joining Bruce among this community build's walking wounding. I fell off my bicycle today on the way to the office and broke my right elbow. I can barely type - let alone work with the fiddly bits I've gotten to on my Ellyson model. I'm in a splint pending surgery probably next week. I may post some additional pictures before the end of the month - I've done some work on the superstructure parts since my last update. So it goes. Anyway, I'm looking forward to participating in your modeling via your posts. Barry

Ellbow injuries suck. Make sure you get the proper post OP mobilisation treatment! It is as important as having a sucessful OP!!! Don't underestimate it and get better soon!

July 23: Thanks to all for kind get well wishes. This too shall pass. I managed to stack the pieces I've been working on for a current status photo. Nothing is glued in place, but I've started adding the small bits and extending to camouflage to the superstructure - the camo is going to require a lot more work. Working with one arm, I managed to drop the 03 bridge piece and lost the little PE loop antenna that attaches to the back rail - probably should have waited to mount it but was overcome with detail fever at the time. The following three shots are the last I'll be posting until I get my arm back. Barry

Hi barry,
very very good progress on your work. I saw you spared no effort making this model. Any ship is beautiful under camo scheme(I didn't say non-camo'ed ship is not beautiful ) I love your scheme combination. The color looks just right o my eyes.

Hi Barry,
First of all take care of the elbow, make sure you get proper physiotherapy. My ruptured achilles tendon healed completely thanks to proper PT.
The ship looks great, the camo is great, lovely muted colours, great selection of paints.

August 19: This is more of a medical rather than modeling update in response to Gunny's reminder. I had to have the right elbow repaired surgically and have been in a shoulder to hand cast since 7/29. Hope it will come off for something more manageable and to start PT after my next appointment on 8/28. Won't get back to working on Ellyson until then at the earliest. Love what you guys have been doing - keep it up!

Wow Barry, my heart goes out to you! At least you were flying along like gangbusters early on (unlike slowpokes like... well, me) so you have plenty of time to relax and recuperate and still get the Ellyson done in time. Feel better soon!

That camo scheme and detailing is very sharp, and don't forget, there's plenty of time to build. What an injury does is give you time to think, and build up enthusiasm.
Cheers,
