KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid
As most of you know, projects and campaigns are supposed to help you improve your modeling skills, your interest in a particular subject or theme and also to have fun!
So, and as usual with me, I have started late on this campaign, and my goal was to make usage of my 1/700 Tamiya SSNG Kursk, that was sitting in the stash for a long time...
My intention was to make it as SSNG Tomsk or SSGN Omsk, depending on what photos I would be able to found on the internet...
Little was found, but I have found a few more Soviet/Russian sub photos that started to make my mind running wild! Again, plastic card (evergreen) and some more boxes in the stash, gathered so that this mindless project may come to live!
I should had that the cherry on top, is still missing
Hope you like it, and as usual, comments/critics are most welcome
Rui
The base:
Base color applied (Nato Black) after the simple constuction...
Watercolour paper sea base
The final layout (?)
Note the partial pier (scratch built), the old barge (also scratch built) and the modified tug (I though that BFM Tugs were too good to spend this way)
Details, details....
First coat of varnish applied to the base and sea base (this last one needs another coat)

hello Rui,
looks great to me.i like how you did the water,it looks like the water is just rippling across the surface.the pier and the tug/barge is a great plus for the scene you are creating.
cheers,
Bruce

Hmmm, I do recognise the design of the diorama from somewhere.... Not that bothers me much!!!!
The Kilo & Alfa still have the Siberian Swans detail!!!!!
Looking very good indeed. The idea of the tug is smashing.
Well done. Looking forward to see it soon.

As I have told the rest of the staff members a LOT of work (fortunately) has taken me from MSW and my workbench.
Finally, yesterday and today I had some bench time, that I enjoyed working more on this dio.
The only issue with this project was the fact that the Kursk model (here depicted as it's older sister Omsk) broke while gluing it to the base!! It was the first time that this happened to me (a model breaking in half - when it had a warp of about 1,5 mm in full lenght) and you can guess the "colorful" language and the will of sending the whole thing trough the window
This made me spend more time trying to correct the breeched hull (about 1 mm), with putty, sanding, putty, sanding, masking and painting that area with NATO Black (with extra care not to damage the near hull decals). I am not fully satisfied with the result, but the fact that the sub is already glued in place, makes difficult to repair it at 100%.
At this stage, I still need to:
- Glue tug and barge;
- Add Crew members;
- Add a few more details to the pier, including the boarding plank;
- Add towing cables and mooring cables;
- Add some of the masts (maintenance day);
- Add a few more details to the MIr Mini-sub;
- Give another coat of varnish to the water base;
- Paint the base matt black (sectioned areas).
Also I am wondering on the name for this dio....
- Workhorse of the Russian Navy (the Tug, of course!!!)
- Just in case...
- Another exercise exit
or just
- SSGN K-186 “Omsk” (Oscar II class)
And now, here are the photos
Comments and critics are most welcome!!
Just a note about the Tug...
It's one of those that came in the box Tug Set from Hasegawa/Tamiya/Fujimi waterline series, but heavily modified, with a total of 56 parts (for now).
Cheers,
Rui

Is that a mini Mir submersible on the barge? Very cool dio, I see you also put some lines from the dock to the sub very nice!

Hi Alex
Yes, it's a MIR - it's from Pit-Road's Equipment for Modern Soviet Ships
The dio is still missing a lot of small details, but it's going on the right course (if nothing weird happens again!)
Thanks for the support
Rui

a great scene, and first class modelling, Rui, and I like the angle which gives the whole composition more depth and movement.
Cheers,
