Photo etch or resin? Prepainted ?

you would think with the success Hasegawa is having with their resin set, other manufactures would quit trying to pass off 2d stuff onto the builder. These probably would have been quite acceptable a year ago, but using them next to the 3d resin stuff would be too obvious.

out of date soon as they are released. Having now used a few brands of 3d figures on ships, there's no way I would even contemplate photo-etch 'flatties' again. I think Tamiya's plastic 'flatties are going to be a real flop as well.

Gonna have to agree with Kym whole heartedly on this point...with the current 1/350 figgies that have been popping up in injection mold, 3D style, the choice is simple, IMHO...although the pre-painted factor is a drawing point (especially to someone like myself, with bad eyes and equally fat fingers! ), for an overall truly realistic population, the 3D figgies overpower the PE flatties, most definitely, even if you go the extra mile and add extra dimension to the PE figgies with white glue, PVA, etc. (which would then make the pre-painted factor a moot point)...

There must still be a market for these, though, as the major PE producers who currently have them in their catalog are still producing them, and adding new choices along the way, and I'm sure that GS has a full Marketing Analysis Dept. that researched the move before they decided to jump on board, but I'm thinking that soon, most modelers who add population to their builds will be gravitating towards the more life-like plastic counterparts...time will tell!

Having gotten a set of the Tamiya IJN "half" figures a while back as well as a couple of sets of PE flat ones in 1/350 from Tom's and GMM not to mention all manner of the 1/.700 PE figure sets from a few different manufacturers, all I can say is the more the merrier. Some sets of the resin variety are much better in 3D of course, but then you are limited by the number of poses available. With a broader range of choices you can modify the PE one easily enough and then fatten them up with some PVA or Elmers' White glue. If you are really dedicated, multiple coats of primer and paint will do as well.
