I saw Great Models listing their pre-order price of $205. I think orders over $100 are shipped free with them.Has anyone found it cheaper?

That is the cheapest I have seen.
I know I will be waiting to get one. I am looking toward the Prinz Eugen. I would love to also be able to get the Ise, but will have to wait. The Battle of Denmark Straight calls.

I was just on Greatmodels website, and found the following breakdown:
1/350 Akagi- $204.45
"Super Set PE"- $91.15
"Wooden Deck set"- $91.15
All in USD, of course.
My question is this: The description of the "wooden deck" says it's a "sticker type". Now, to me that intimates an applied "sticker" imitating wood. And I'll be damned if I'm going to pay that kind of money on this kit, only to put a tacky sticker on it for a deck. Am I mistaken, and its a veneer of wood with a sticky back? If I'm not mistaken, where would I get a real wood deck for this bad boy?

I don't think you'll have to worry. I'd imagine that it is a wood deck with a sticky backing. Hasegawa released a 700 scale wood deck for their triple deck Akagi and doesn't make sense that they'd skimp on the quality of this accessory for this much anticipated kit in a larger scale.
What we should be worried about is how to convince our significant others to skip a morgage payment just to buy the kit and all the extras.
Just kidding by the way.blaster76

Hasegawa doesn't play games, I am quite sure that it is wood with a sticky back. However, you could forgo this item as I have heard that the deck detail is quite excellent. Anther trick is to buy it in separate transactions. While you save $40 by prordering the ship, you only save $4 with the PE set. SO get the ship, wait 3 or 4 months and then order the PE and if you must have it the deck another couple. I have a stash and so I put things on a scedule. I'm finishing up some armor kits by this weekend with 2 months left I may do the Hood or opt to build a 72nd PT and more Armor so I can get decent numbers up for this year's buy VS build log. (my goal is to build more than buy to stat reducing my stash...I'm losing this year if I get the Ise and Akagi as of right now I'm tied with 11 apiece)) so I only want to save money as I am a long ways from putting the Akagi in the que.

Well gentlemen...stay tuned. I plan on getting the whole shmo, and will let you know. I was following the Kongo build log, and the gentleman uses an actual wood deck...very nice. I thought about seeing if the company he bought his deck from plans on doing an Akagi deck...I'm sure they will.
The suggestion of buying in stages is a good one. I do believe that is exactly what I will do. At $205.00, the ship is a big hit to begin with.
BTW...aren't those PE support girders under the deck the shiznit?

Answered my own question, and thought I'd pass it on. The company I was referring to is Sinsengumi, and I couldn't find a wooden Akagi deck. So, until I hear from someone else that is buying, I think I'll hold off buying the deck for last.

Hi Guys,
The photoetch super set A,B and C are just for the "underdecking" and it's for a limited run as per Hasegawa's web site. You'll still need the Basic A,B and C sets for the ship rails, ladders, and plane details plus the jack stay set. The wood decking is real wood with a sticky backing and some photo etch details. I pre-ordered everything All at once including extra planes sets just to get everything covered....Just need brass barrels.

If so that does not suprise me at all.

thanks for the heads up. I rpobably would have waited another 3 or 4 weeks and found the kit in stock at $250. Got my order into GM today. I went ahead and got the superset PE as that had a $20 savings by pre-order. Even so, a $295 credit charge is going to hurt. It will really hurt if the Ise comes out during the same billing period with an additional $225. Thank God I've picked up some overtime and will get a lot more during the holidays.

Hi Steve!
I fell your pain: opting for the Akagi this month meant foregoing the purchase of several 8- and 6-inch barrels on sale at Squadron Mail order.
Al Torres' warning about the short-run on Ise is annoying as I hate being forced to front-load my orders for expensive ships.

Well folks, I've given in to the urge. I've placed the order of all orders in with a local hobby store. I decided to go with my LHS for a couple of reasons, the're friendly and have competitive pricing but mainly for fear of how much the postal service will charge me extra for that massive kit box. I've ordered all the PE sets and two extra aircraft sets, but no wooden deck, I figure the deck will require minimal masking and it's $100 extra not spent on a package that is already way too expensive.
I'll let you know the minute it arrives.

I am saving for either the Prinz Eguen or Ise. I am leaning toward the Prinz, just because she is one of my favorites.
It should be a fun couple of months coming up for us ship folks.

I'ld opt for the Ise. I don't think that will be made but once whereas the Prinz being a Trumpeter will be made in greater quantities. Usually 6 months down the road you can find them at a 15 - 20 % discount. I did that with the Richelieu and saved $45

Hi Jim!
I'd say most of 2009 will be fun for us ship modelers as well: battleships, heavy cruisers, light cruisers, even carriers coming out in 1:350--if we can afford it!

I'm leaning towards Midway, that way I can scuff her up a bit more,.... and who knows maybe I'll add a few Dauntless DB directly overhead!

Hi Frank!
You could also stage a few B-17s or better yet, a B-26 roaring down the length of her flight deck!

I'm goin with Pearl version. I want to do Fuchida's markings for that one. He as in a Kate and he had special tail markings. I'm in no hurry to pick up packs of planes. Wait until I get the ship, see how much hanger deck is showing, then wait a bit and see if Trumpeter jumps up and releases planes for it. Though 12 aircraft for $15 is a pretty darn good price. Depends on if they are "kits" or one piece

According to Hobby Link Japan.... you get 12 planes in clear plastic with the kit
3 Zeros
6 Kates
3 Vals
They boast that the detail on the planes are close to their 1/48 planes!
