There has been alot of talk about the upcomming 350 scale Akagi. But what about rumors I hear of a retooling/re-release of these two kits in 700 scale?
I've noticed that the kits themselves have mysteriously dropped off most of the internet purchasing sites the past few months, but there are preorders for photoetch from Hasegawa listed on Great Models for both kits.
Oh Hasegawa, if you are listening, please retool your 700 scale Kaga for me. I promise I'll buy one, and all the extras.
It is not the skills its the scale! Everyone just likes 1:700.

Hi Anthony!
Yes a new Kaga would be good!
For the Akagi... I would skip a new one - I have invested much on the Lionroar PE flight deck set

and on a few more sets (Eduard and GMM)

I'd take a new Kaga and Akagi in 700th!... Considering what a great job Hasegawa did with their tri-decker.

I would almost bet real money you'll see a 1/350 Kaga, and maybe even a pre-war triple deck Kaga from Hasegawa in the next year or so....

Call me crazy, but that seems like a sucker bet. I would agree with you on that though.

Hi Martin!
I hope you're right, I'd get such a Kaga right away.
Perhaps this will open the door to other IJN carriers in 1:350!

All these new 350th kits are great, it'll be interesting how our current economic slide will affect our purchase potential. Here in Canada, we have the double whammy of an economic down turn and a free falling dollar. Our loonie has lost 20% of it's worth in the last month. At it's high point it was valued at $1.10 compared to the US green back,... Today it slipped below $0.80, it's lowest in 4 years! I'll still do online shopping, but the big 350th ship models with all the accompanying bling might have to take a back seat, at least until the dollar improves.

Of course as is well known that the Akagi is within weeks of appearng on the shelves. A Shokaku has been announced. So they are coming. If they are doin all the battleships you can bet on the carriers and cruisers as well. The big issue is for other companies to jump in and produce British and Ameriacn crusiers in 350 and more British and European battleships,

Anthony, to answer your question, there is definitely a 1/700 Akagi in the works, but no idea when it will come out. We may hear something at the next Shizuoka show... I would also love a Kaga, but I don't know if one is in the planning.

They will both appear as soon as I build the old ones in my stash.

Never were truer words spoken. This happens all the time in armor modeling. Just when you think you've built the quintessential kit of something, a new and improved version appears a few months later, and a better one a few months after that. Dragon in particular is notorious for this.

If it ever gets like this for ships, it'll probably drive me out of the hobby.

I've only seen PE for the 1/350 kit. Was the 3 decker PE in the recent hobby show photos?

To my knowledge there are only set A and set B for the 1/700 triple decker
They are on pre-order in several online shops, but no image about the content

Thanks Martin

Well, that solves the girder issue, although I think, imho, that these two sets could be condensed in one - who will buy set A, and leave off set B???

Well, those two sets will go a long way adding to the kit.
So, now we have the wooden decks and two PE frets. I think all we would need is some railings, funnel caps, and a few boat davits.
Well and of course the time to do the whole thing.

Hi Jim
Yep, but apart the funnel details, the rest is available in several brand sets.
It also would be nice if Lionroar would do a specific/dedicated set for Akagi Triple deck in the same manner has it's 1/700 IJN Kagero set.
It would be nice to have a "one set has it all", although I must say that the other sets are also useful

Hi Steve!
I suspect the model companies will take the path of least resistance: with a Prinz Eugen coming out next year, it would make sense to exhaust the limited Kriegsmarine surface ship varieties first. How likely would a 1:350 Scharnhorst/Gneisenau be? Or a panzershiffe?
As 1:350 modeler, I applaud all new releases in the scale, although I am incredulous at news of an upcoming triple deck Akagi in that scale (think of cost for THAT one

).
