Hi guys,
I just thought I would share some pictures of my another project.
After visiting the U-505 exhibition in Chicago I decided to make a diorama of her during her capture on June 4th 1944.
Because there is no good model of version IXC with the extended wintergarden I decided to modify Nichimo's 1/200 U-511.
Many thanks go to Rui Matos for providing me with the reference pictures of U-505!

The model is finished. I am just trying to find somebody who will make a custom size beveled board for me so I can mount the model on it and create the water. It is also missing the rigging which will be added after I have it on the board.

Here are some of the reference pictures of what I wanted to achieve:

Some pictures of the process of modifying the conning tower:

And here is the finished sub:

As always any comments/constructive criticism/ideas will be welcome.

Hi Libor!

Glad I could help!
It looks good, but I also would like to add a tip on the rust: try to vary the tone/color.
Please read this review, where I explain how to obtain a convincing rust effect (at least I want to think so )

If help is needed, just ask!
Keep up

Very nice conversion and scratch build - looks real good.

I donīt know if its the photoes, but I think the colours could do with a slight wash to even out the contrast a bit - but it might just be the photoes.

@Rui thanks for the tip I will definitely try to play with the "rust" you are right that it looks too uniform but on the other hand the pictures make it a little worse than it really looks on the model. Also I made a small mistake which I will learn from: I should not dullcote OVER the rust but rather apply the rust after the dullcote. That is the culprit of the "uniformness" of the rust.

@Jan pretty much the same: the pictures don't do the model justice. It looks diferrent (and much better) in real. For example the wooden deck looks really like the weathered wood.

My photographing skills are definitely not up to my modeling skills. I will try to take better pics when it is mounted.

We won't get much sunlight outside for the next 4 months. Welcome to Ohio...

Libor - nice work, and a nice idea to base it on those photos! Makes it all more of a point and personal.

Rui - nice XXIII build, esp the weathering and rust. The article tho, who wrote that crap?! JUST KIDDING! article was great too, keeping the rust technique in mind for the future!

Hi Libor!

Lewis Pruneau produced a similar scene in 1:35 some years back. To see some pics, go to:

www.u-modelismo.com/reportajes_estatico/captura_del_u505/

After all, there's no such thing as too much reference material!

@ Wink thanks a lot, mate. Now I just wish I could find somebody to supply me with beveled custom-size board so I can mount the model and create the water.

@ Karl funny thing that you mentioned the link. These are the same pictures which prompted me to attempt the build of U-505 at the day of her capture.
