Well, after little deliberation! I gave in to Hasegawa's latest release.

The Akagi is both impressive in size and in price! I decided to go through my local hobby store to purchase this kit and it's accompanying photo-etch sets for a couple of reasons. First and most importantly is to support my LHS owners and secondly I was quite afraid of the delivery charges and Canada post additional charges on such a massive box that tend to jump the price of on-line purchases in my area.

This is not a kit for the novice builder or for the financially minded. While I do not have al the Hasegawa PE sets yet (the rest will arriving this week), here's a breakdown of my costs so far...

350th Akagi (Z25) $349.98
detail set A (QG26) $66.98
detail set B (QG27) $66.98
detail set C (QG28) $49.98
carrier based aircraft set (QG30) $24.98 (x3)

My LHS plastic peddler did knock off 16% off the total price which removed the 13% taxes and then more.

I'll up date this price listing in the next week as I purchase the remaining sets, the only set I'm not planning on purchasing is the wooden deck.

Please do all potential purchasers a favour and list your costs of this model. If you have not bought, but are speculating prices based on on-line costs, make sure you make that distinction.

Santa is popping up all over the place, even if he did significant'y lighten the old wallet of some serious canucklebucks.

Can't wait to see you work your way through that lot.

So far I've got the kit for $235 and the super PE aset at $120. Shipping was free from Great Models. I'm figuring Lucky or Easy hobby will get this stuff in and plan to order A and B PE sets and at least 1 probably 2 sets of the aircrafdt. I'm kind of hoping Trunpeter will get sneaky and do sets of the aircraft. They like to sell you six of one type for around $7 a box. That way I can just get Kates and zeros for my First wave set-up.

I am not sure if I should be envious of you Akagi owners or not. I have so much I want to do and so much I want to get. Plus I can't seem to get any headway on my current projects.

It will be interesting when somebody starts to build one and keep us updated.

You know, with so many folks apparently getting the big Akagi, perhaps we should have a campaign on modeling the old girl?

Hello Everyone,

I just got the entire PE set plus the wooden deck and the Akagi kit from my local hobby store here in Ontario, Canada. I bought 5 extra plane sets aswell and my bill was HUGE!!! I also got 30% discount from them. I 've got Fukuya brass barrels for the main guns on the way. I've ordered them from Hobby Link Japan. Your looking to close to a $1000.00 (Canadian) not including glue, paint or any tools..and I'll still need the folding machine for some of the PE.

The kit is great! but we can use a build log to guide us through..The under-decking is complex an the instruction sheet is vague!

I'm not committing myself to anything, my work has completely stifled my hobby time over the last year,... but with that being said,... there's a really good opportunity over the upcoming holidays that I might just get not one or two days off... but 18 DAYS OFF. If this holds true and if my remaining PE sets arrive before the 18th of Dec. I'll be one of the early bloggers.

Questions;

I'll be building the Midway Akagi, do I need more than my 3 additional (four total) sets of aircraft?

Are the decals matched for Pearl Harbor or Midway?

thanks,
Frank

PS Keep posting your prices and where you purchased your Akagi, it'll help others to decide on where's best to save some hard earned dough.

...but would all the aircraft be on the flight deck? To ease flight deck congestion, would they not be brought up to the deck in waves prior to launch?

I would say looking at any pictures of flight operations would give you an idea of how many aircraft were on deck at any one time. Normally the flight deck would be kept clear of any unneeded aircraft.

Some pictures of the carriers show between 8 and 15 aircraft on deck. But were those taken midway through launching or just prior to launching. The numbers of aircraft in each wave are known, but I wonder if there is any hard evidence as to how they were launched from the carriers.

I would find it interesting how the aircraft were launched in the waves. Most of the time the slower aircraft are launched first then the faster aircraft launched. Of course there would have been some CAP over the carriers, just in case.

If any Canadians are looking to buy this kit and accessories, I can get them in for you as well.

Only reason I say Canadians, is because shipping inside of Canada through Canada Post will be bad enough, never mind shipping to the US or Internationally.

All Prices in CDN$, No Tax

Follow the link, and scroll down till you see the Carrier, and all its bits and you will find the prices. Not sure what they are going for up in Ontario, one gentleman said he had about $1000 tied up.

Elm City Hobbies - Akagi

Of course my prices are before any discount is considered.

1st wave was just Kates and Zeros, and those were the only planes on-deck at the time of launch. Japanese carrier operations were vastly different than US Navy procedures.

It leaves the modeler in the position of having to take artistic license or "this is not the way it was, but the way I wanted it" with their build if you want all three types on deck at the same time. Or you could build the first wave at Midway, which had ONE Kate on a deck full of Vals and Zeros. Also covered in my review.

Decals are for both Pearl Harbor and Midway, but the instructions only show Pearl Harbor.

Pearl harbor first wave. Would the zeros have been launched first and Where would Fuchida's Kate have been in the mix? What was the exact number of zeros and the exact number of Kates? Like one would think, were they all on the deck at the launching or did they run some more up as the deck cleared? I remembr seeing film of the launchings and seeing Vals taking off. Of course these could have been second wave, but did any of the other 5 carriers send some off in the first wave?

Zeros first... the numbers are covered in the review. Pages 490-1 of "At Dawn We Slept" by Gordon Prange state the zeros took off first, followed by the Kates, with Fuchida's Kate in the lead.

Don Preul's 1/96 Akagi model at the Arizona Visitor's center has the first wave strike on deck; you can use this link to determine spotting (hint: Zeros, high level bombers, torpedo bombers)

I see that the decals for the air wing are part of the ship. Are additional decals provided in each aircraft set?

The kit has two decal sheets; one for the ship, and one for the air group. The sheets that come with the separate airplane sets are the same as the air group sheet that comes with the kit.
