...Chaiça... you are a lucky bast**** not to be a opened range finder (like some british or portuguese used) ...

Hi there...

Here´s a small update on what I´ve been doing lately. And for those that think that I´m a "slow" builder, rest assured that I´ve a reason for that...

Still need to add a couple more items, such as the side-stairs and the canvas that protected the rangefinder side openings.

This is TRUE modeling! Makes guys like me who use kits seem like amateurs! Such beautiful work! And, no you are definitely not a slow a builder- since you're building everything from scratch, you're much faster than I could ever be!

Remarkable work indeed!!! Of course you can count with my help if you want me to build one Zero for the carrier!!!!!!!
Just kidding. Superb work so far. Just don't take all the GIN stand for the carrier...leave some place for the tiny divine 1/700 scale models!!!!!

Another small update, this time is the Director base, which also doubled as the surface lookout positions:

I´ve also resumed work on the hull. I´ll put some photos of it in here, soon.

.

PS - Sorry for the poor quality pictures. I think I have to start seriously thinking, about buying a decent digital camera...

Fantastic scratch building Jose! The level of detail you're providing will make great reference for anyone building the Yorktown.

Darn, you are working full steam ahead on these big small details! I am sorry I can't attend the lunch on 28th, but I have another thing on schedule!
I am really looking forward to see the island and all these gems in March
Keep up

And here´s what I´ve been doing for the last days/weeks. I´ve been working on a magic trick!
Someone had mentioned earlier that the Essex class carriers had not one, but two MK.37 Directors. So, if I was building one, where should I get the second one ? The same question goes to the director base....
The answer is obvious...a magic trick !!! It´s not hard, it only requires some magical items and a bit of practice.
Follow my steps:

1) A magical hat and a magic wand

2) Say the correct words. Either ABRACADABRA or HOCUS POCUS will do...

3)....and......here it is....2 Mk.37 Directors AND 2 different director bases

The one on the left is supposed to face the bow, and the one in the right is supposed to face the stern. Notice that the bases are slightly different.
Well, I hope you have enjoyed.
The GREAT JOSEDINI leaves the stage, now !!!

Hi Chaiça (The Great Magician!) :D

It's those "small" details that make all the difference!
The pedestals are really unique and the directors are perfect replicas
Congratulations and keep up!

I was getting a bit of "plastic sickness", so I decided to pick up the hull, again...
The hull is now 95% covered with its "first skin", made of 1,5mm balsa sheet. The only thing needed is some "heavy" sanding at the bow and stern, as they are made of solid blocks of balsa wood. This "balsa skin" will serve as a backing for the next layer of..."skin". This second layer will be made of 0,5mm plastic.

.

PS - The shinny metal strip on top of the upside-down hull, is a 1 meter steel ruler...

Hi Chaiça!

You'll need a trailer to take it to the modeling events!!
Perhaps you can share it with Luis?

Keep up

Fantastic work Jose! Superb detail and effort!

I do think you could save yourself some trouble by doing a litle resin casting just for yourself...all those little bits would be easy casts...but your results are wonderful already.

Hi

Just a quick note, so that you don´t think I´ve disappeared ...
I´m trying to build the island, as well as other "smaller bits", as much as possible, so that it can be shown in the forthcoming Portuguese modeling contest - ModelTroia in Lisbon. Not much time to post photos, but as soon as possible, I´ll try to upload some.

Hi

As promised, here´s what I´ve been doing lately. It´s the forward defence platform, atop the "island".

Not yet complete, but I hope to have it finished in a day or two.

Hi

And here´s the result of two and a half months cutting and glueing styrene and some copper sheet. The only thing missing from this picture, which was also built within the same timeframe is the pilot ballon house.
Almost all the major structures are built and erected. The only (major) thing missing is the tripod mast. I recently started building the various platforms walkways, around the island.
And, forgive me for the crappy pictures...

Now, let´s get going...there´s a TON of smaller details, waiting to be added.
