Hello to you all.
Some of you may already know this work-in-process from another well-known forum. I took the decision to post my work here, because I would like to hear some constructive comments, opinions and advices. Something I was not getting over there....

Here we go... In late November last year, I took the decision to build Yorktown as she appeared in early-to-mid 1945 (not yet decided). So far, this is the work I“ve done:

The hull

Hangar and Forecastle deck

And the hull takes some rest. I decided to start the "Island"

In the meantime, I had also built the 5“/38 gunmount master (4 will be needed)

Yorktown“s "island" smokestack

And this is where I stand. Still a lot of work to do in both the Island, and the hull, of course . I“m currently working in the 5“ gun directors (2 of them). As soon as I have new pictures, I“ll post them here. Meanwhile, feel free to comment and ask questions (if you wish). They are highly appreciated.

Nice work so far, i like the level of details on the gunturrets - looks like they are craved out in foam first and then built up with styrene sheet ?

Where do you get your drawings ?

Hi Chaiēa!

I am glad you posted it here!
Keep up the good work - and are we going to see some of these smaller modeling projects (guns, smoke stack, etc) at Modeltroia 2009?

Yes you are. I intend to build the "island" as much as possible, so that I can take her with me, and show her off, at "our" SIG table. Also, all four 5“ are now cast. They will go with me, too (painted?).

Hi Jan. I“m relying heavily on the "Anatomy of the Ship - Intrepid" and several smaller booklets I found. It took me almost 2 years to get all the references I thought I needed. If interested, I can put here a list of all the titles I have collected.
And no. The turrets are not carved up from foam. They were built using styrene only. I had a couple of photos showing the construction of these, but I ended up losing them.

WOW! is right, nice work Jose. It looks like you are cranking it right along.

I have plans to construct a 1/72 IJN Tama Light Cruiser project and have been doing my homework to that end. I am in the searching out references and working up drawings stage at the moment. So far I have the Chatham IJN Cruisers of the Pacific War and the Morskie Monograph in the Tama for references to work from.

I like your technique for building up the hull. I have a set of 9 hull shapes with their positions patterned to scale from the Morskie Monograph so far as well as a rather nice looking red oak keel piece I plan on using.

Looking forward to your updates as you work your way through this project. She should look grand with a flight deck full of 1/72 scale aircraft and crew.

Ok, so you copy and enlarged the drawings, it looks like you glued it on your crosscetions and front deck ?

Ok, they just looked like they were filled with something.

You“re right. They were filled with plaster of Paris, so that I could have a "solid" master. Otherwise, the 5“gun mount walls would most probably cave-in, the moment I put them inside a silicon rubber mould (due to outside pressure from the same rubber).

The four 5“mounts are now cast !!! I“ll post a picture, or two, tomorrow.

YES Please, Chaiēa!
I am glad you are willing to bring the smaller parts of this built to the GIN table* in this year ModelTroia!
Let's see what I can bring this year

Rui

PS: For the non-portuguese guys here (the BIGGEST part ) in 2008, a few of us, portuguese ship modelers, decided to create a Portuguese Non region SIG: Naval Interest Group or in portuguese: Grupo de Interesse Naval, hence the GIN acronym
We are not many, but...

...WE ARE GREAT !!!!

As promised, here are the pictures of the turrets. They are still "hot", from the furnaces... I was not the one that cast these beauties. A BIG thank you for the person that did the job, if you“re reading this.

And this one is a kind of a special tribute to the man who turned the gun barrel for me, Mr. Peter Lienau, from Germany. Great job, many thanks...

And this is how the Mk.37 Director looks...not much, but the basic shape is there...

And it“s all for now. See you soon...

Hey

My guess is that Joćo made a great job
If not, it is still an excellent casting!

The director is also looking great... are you going to have a "special order" radar screens PE set made?
From the same source???

Thanks for sharing - I am eagerly looking forward to see them LIVE!

Hi

Thanks for all the kind words. They are truly appreciated.
I“m (still) currently dealing with the Mk.37 Director. More than 60 individual pieces have been cut and glued, and I still haven“t started building the radar antennas and supports for it... Hope to post a picture or two, when the main director body is complete.

Hi Kenny

Selling some 5“ turrets is something that has already been thought by me, the caster (Joćo aka softsea) and a 3rd person that sponsored the initial project....who knows ???

Casting a portion of the island and two of the AA turrets would sell quite nicely. Together with a portion of the flight deck, would make a great base for 72nd scale USN aircraft.

Here“s what I have done these last days...

Mk.37 Director "bits" and rangefinder (not yet glued)...

And this is how the Director stands, right now. I had to tweak the pictures a bit, so that the details could be seen. I still have to end the construction of all the hinges that are present on all 9 flaps. Not to mention the canvas that covered the rangefinder, the side stairs, add the optics to the rangefinder, the....

Comments and/or corrections are welcome, as usual.

Hi Chaiēa

It looks very good and you are a lucky bast**** not to be a opened range finder (like some british or portuguese used)

I think that the section of the CV, like Frank mentioned would be a smasher seller for naval aviation guys.
Give it a thought

Cheers and keep up!
Rui

That's what I would want one for. Shoot, I would settle for the reference he used for the styrene one.

Hope that this weekend I'll "Up the Bofors" + 4x
