Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out what paints to use to paint my King George V ship with. I've seen a lot of people are impressed with the quality and range of colours offered by WEM. Would anyone recommend them over other brands such as say Tamiya?

I'm hoping to avoid having to mix colours as suggested in Tamiya's painting instructions. I'm looking to paint the 1945 scheme, I believe it's called the Admiralty Standard (Light Tone) Scheme. Darker hull, lighter superstructure, and field blue on horizontal surfaces.

Any suggestions on the best match of colours regardless of company?

Thanks, Joseph

Hi Joseph
IMHO, no! In my first couple of years of modelling, I tried many different brands and types of paint (enamel & acrylic) and without reservation, settled with Colourcoat enamels.
Winning points: Accuracy of colour, no mixing, excellent airbrush coverage (I mix 50/50) and great to hand brush (if considered too thick, just add a couple of drops of thinners)

Hey Joseph,

WEM is spot on on their colors. The best when it comes to enamels. If you are looking at acrylics, the Model Master Marine line, while currently OOP, is the best in my opinion. You can still find the Model Master paints at Battlefleet and Free Time Hobbies.

Just remember when using the colorcoats stir, stir, strir, and stir ! The more the better. Your coverage will be better, especially when you need to handpaint some areas.

Without a doubt WEM makes perfect ship paint. It has all the pluses in my opinion. The downside for me is bang for the buck. It is not readily available in my neck of the woods, therby much more expensive to obtain. It ain't as cheap drop for drop as Model Master's enamels plus I have that high shipping charge having to mail order it. Being in Canada, it is probably more readily available so thatis all I would use.

As our shipmates have stated Joe, if it's complete accuracy that you're looking for, then the Colourcoats line isn't going to be beat...the quality of their enamels is equally as good, and if you're used to working with enamels, you shouldn't have any problems with this line...take a look over at Snyder and Short for a complete listing, and I do believe that GreatModels Webstore lists their line (with special assortments, ie, RN, USN, etc. of the paints available in one set) as well...

Thanks for the replies eveyone. I think I'll give them a try, my boat may not be 100% accurate, but maybe my paint job will be!

Now just a little research to find the colours I need

I just have a few WEM CC and a ton of Model Master enamels… color is spot on as mentioned, but can get good approximations with some of the MM colors. Once I deplete my MM enamels I will slowly substitute with WEM CCs.

You can get them CONUS at GreatModels.
