Since the kids were playing and the wife was taking a nap when I came home from work, I decided to retreat to the basemet and my workshop to kick off this build.
I“m going to build ICM“s Markgraf in 1:350 - with the WEM etch for it. While waiting for the brass to arrive, i have begun work on the hull.
First at look at the kit:

Here is the inside of the onepiece hull, cleand up and with 2 8 mm holes drilled and filled with a 8 mm tube glued an secured to the hull.

The tubes protude on the other side, and fits nicely into some 9 mm brass tube (.357 to be precise

The holes in the hull is drilled straigth into a piece of surplus wood, that will work as a template when drilling the holes in that final base. This current base is just for handling the ship during constrution.

I have given the inside og the hull, and the underside of the deck parts a quick spray with a black rattlecan as i have drilled out the portholes - these were somewhat vague on the kit, and was afraid that they would be difficoult to see when done.

Here you can se the drilled out portholes.

Regarding the story of the Markgraf, She was of the König class, layed down in Kiel in 1914 and met here final rest being interned at Scapa Flow in 1919 during the crews own scuttling. During the scuttling the British attemt to intervene the ships captain and about 18 other crewmembers died from gunfire.
She still lies in Scapa at a depth that have prevented salvaging, during sinking she turned upside down and now rests on her deck and superstructure.
Cheers/Jan

hello Jan,
i like the idea of the tubes inside the hull to go with the brass tube base mounts.i would have never thought about doing something like that.
does the brass tubes stop at the top of the plastic tubes or goes up to the deck?
this way of mounting looks like a good way to mount a large ship.
thanks for sharing and for the photo's.it is giving me something to think about for my builds.
cheers,
Bruce

Hi Bruce, the brass tubes only goes up to the bottom of the ship.
I prefer a simple base with just tubes, as i feel a too fancy base and mount detracts from the model, and after all its the model thats important.
A question ? - I guess the Markgraf would have blastbags at the mainturrets - buy I cant see any on the photos I have at hand, would the be more or less inside the turret openings ?
Cheers/Jan

hello Jan,
thanks for your answers.i thought it was that way.
on the Blastbags, all of my books and photo's show what looks like they are where the Guns and Turrets meet.i have a mag article that shows the weathering of theS.M.S. Konig,It has some good closeup photo's.i will take a look and see if i can give you a better answer.
cheers,
Bruce

That would sure be nice, I“m very much at sea when it comes to pre WWII stuff

I have been working on the hull - I will show some pictures later - I found a nice shot on the net showing a König under construction showing that the hull had lot more details than in the kit. I am going to try with thin masking tape, I think it was in one of Dades great blogs i saw that technique ...
Still waiting for the etch ....

hello Martin,
Looks like a interesting model. Are you going to use any PE or AM parts, if you have a chance to build her?
Let me know if i can help.
cheers,
Bruce

Yeah, I've wanted to build it for a long time - figured this was a good reason to crack her open. I'll get a set of 1/700 generic railings for her, at this point I think that is all she'll need.
Thanks for the offer. If you can somehow clone me, then you can help me (the clone goes to work, I stay home and build models, of course)!

hello all,
@Kostas,
Welcome to the campaign. The HMS Erin was a interesting ship in her day.
@Ken,
That is a nice looking kit. The PE will go great with the kit. Welcome to the campaign.
How is your hand doing? I think that you said that you were going to have surgery on it soon.
Miss Mary and I will keep you and yours in our prayers.
Well, how is everyone else doing? I am still not sure what I am going to build. There are a lot of great models out there, so i need to make up my mind.
Have a Great Weekend,
Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Bruce,
Surgery is this Wednesday. My surgeon said that I should see a difference that day.

Hello Kostas,
Looks like you have a great start for your build. Thanks for the Photo's and update.
How did you make your water base? Is it a premade that you bought? If so, where can i get one? The water looks real to me.
Cheers,
Bruce

Thank you Bruce.I am afraid is custom made.Actually is quite easy this one, just white glue on top of the bare wood (painted better to protect the base from warp in the future) and then once dry apply more with a brush in random places and add some water as well to create the random waves feeling as the glue gets dilute more in places. Finally paint with the acrylic 'blue' of your choice and then apply with a brush and straight from the bottle (no dilute here) a few layers of 'clear' the stuff you put in a bucket when u mop to add shine to the floors. It takes a few minutes to dry and u might need to do it a few times to built up a good layer of it .
I forgot to say that i glue the ship before i start painting the sea , and while the white glue is still fresh.

I'm finishing up a Jutland scene which I'll post separately since it doesn't technically qualify for this campaign, but then I can get to work on some German grosserkreuziers!

Today my Etch arrived from White Ensign, its a nice and detailed piece of etch, but the instructions only covers a small part of the etch, the rest is - in my case - left to educated guesswork, which isn“t easy as i have virtually no referances
I have given it at black primer, makes it easier for my old eyes to see the stuff on a gray background

The hull have recieved a basic paintjob - some spots needs a little touch up - which will be done when the etch is done on the hull, I can see that i have allready progressed too for for some of the etch .... well ...

Close up showing the masked of deck section - never again !!
