Hi all,

I have been thinking of building a ship for a while now... I normally build WW2 aircraft. But have a itch that need to be scratched...

I have been thinking of doing one of the following -

1/350 Revell Bismarck or Tirpitz
1/350 Trumpeter Hornet with B-52 on the Deck
Or a 1/72 Revell U Boat

Has anyone built any of these and what are your thoughts on them?

Thanks for your input!

I built the Hornet out-of -box and it was a pretty straightfoward build,no real construction problems for me,and lord knows I am no shipping expert, some say the bow is too rounded,I don't know, but it looked pretty good with 16 B-25's on the deck.I imagine the PE shouldnt be too extensive if you can handle it,I didn't,but overall I feel I could recommend the kit.

Hey David,

All three of the Revell Germany offerings are excellent and give you very good quality for a respectable price.

David,

Welcome the MSW. As for the kits you are asking about, I have not built any of them. Each one has its pluses and minuses, but in the end it really does depend on you.

Out of the ones you have listed, I would choose the Bismark, but I have wanted to build one of those for years now.

Thanks guys,

I'm starting to lean towards the U-boat... But then I change my mind... and think of something else.

But sounds like the U Boat will be the winner.

Is there much of aftermarket decals for them? I have been on google and there is tons ov PE and resin, but I didn't see much in the way of decals

I've got all three either built or in the stash. I thnk I would recommend the German sub. I am known as a strong proponent of 350 stuff, but out of the box the U-boot is a real winner. There are lots of decal options with the ones supplied in the kit, so you might just want to pick that up before you buy another set. I have seen other decal sets, I just can't remember who makes them.

Revells 1:72 uboat is very nice and will build up a impressive model out of the box, or you can really take it far in aftermarkets.

Its not as fiddly as some 1:350 or 1:700 offerings - and painting something that big is very funny - think of a huge canvass.

Ulad makes some decals - maybe you can find them at White Ensign or Mickster - but they are getting hard to get.

Just convinced the wife to hand over the credit card to buy the u-boat.

Should I get the Wolf pack or the Atlantic Boxing?

I am going to order it from Lucky Models, is there any where that sell them cheaper? Remember shipping is going to be the killer as I'm in New Zealand!

Which version boils down to which one you like the better - i think they are equel quality but one features a deck gun and the other a snorkel. so early or late version ?

Regarding shipping, it might be cheerper to have your local hobby shop order it home for you ?

It is amazing how that works out with pricing.

I got my Nagara from Japan for less, including shipping, than what it cost here in the states.

I love Lucky Model to get my PE sets. They are cheaper and free shipping.

Looking forward to seeing you dive into the U-boat.

Thanks guys for reply's.

I have gone with the early version with the deck gun. I think it looks cooler! Plus there are some nice figures for it too. So it will be landing in the next 10 days

What are some must have aftermarket bits on the market?

Hi David!
Here is what you get in the Eduard offering:

http://www.moduni.de/product_info.php/products_id/3953008?osCsid=06f332ff264e44d18e1625d56931d35e

I think these are the essentials for reasonable price.
