Hope someone can help here...

I'm completing my BIG E and almost ready to install LEDs...So I need to know what color are the lights used for the Island's interior and Hangerdeck....?
I assume "White" during normal operations and "Red" during operations/battle stations?

Thanks!

Probably right, however for your model I would stick to white as you are trying to show off your handiwork.

Thanks for the reply Steve.

The model it's for my client, and I was thinking of including both Red & White LEDs.. with a selection switch for either.

Also, anyone have photos of the ship at night? Where are the mast and navigation lights located, particularly while the ship is underway? I have no clue were the port and starboard lights are located nor the bow and stern lights!

Actually, I think amber is the color of choice for night work--red is too harsh and blue (which is now used in smaller places like Combat Information Centers instead of red) is too weak to illuminate an expanse like a hangar deck.

It's hard to describe, without good close up photos, but the port and stbd lights on modern carriers are usually located at the edge of the flight deck, where it starts to angle in to the bow section.

The Hangar lights are white with several red ones interspersed for emergency night conditions.

There are small white lights surrounding the large '65' on the island (Most Nimitz class have lights in the center of the numbers). There are also lights on the landing strip, various colours(white, yellow and maybe red/green). As well on the LSO platform. Also, there are dozens of white spotlights that shine down from around the island roof and standard large ship runnning lights on the mast, mostly white, with, I think, a red one or two.

The Floating drydock may sell a lighting diagram of the flightdeck, I can't remember.

HTH's,
Darren

Thanks for the replies guys.

I tried the Floating Drydock but found nothing on lights there..?

I'm building a 90s version BIG E, during the period of both Hi & Low Viz aircraft. When the "65" on the island had the rectangular lights inside them.

So for the Island's interior lighting, do you think I should use White LEDs for normal operations and Amber LEDs for emergency/combat operations?

For the Hanger deck, mostly White and some Red or Amber LEDs? as in the photo ? During emergency/combat operations are the White lights turned off ???

I won't do the spotlights and landing lights since my client doesn't want them...That I will do for the next BIG E project!

Can someone please edit my pics and draw arrows to point the locations navigation, etc lights for the Mast and Bow and Stern?

You may try this as well:
Click: defenseimagery.mil
and use the "search" feature there.

Official Enterprise site:
Click: CVN 65
Maybe someone out of the crew can give you the information.

Other than that, the person running this Click: CVN65.us site might be able to help out.

Nothing detailed I can contribute though.
If you ever get this solved, please donīt miss to let us know.

40 years ago when I was on carriers, red was the night light colors. After taps lighting was switched from white to red in all areas visible to the outside, including the bridge areas, and living areas, so as not to destroy the on coming watches night vision.
Internal work spaces, mess decks, etc were still kept in white lights. I don't ever remember the hanger bay being in white lights after dark, as it would 1. be visible clear to the horizon, and 2. be a major destroyer of night vision for the deck crews doing night ops. Things may have changed in the past 40 years, but any passageway, or compartment opening to a weather deck was normally in red light at night. At least on the two bird farms I was on.

Wow Dave which carriers did you serve on? Must have been a real experience to serve on those massive monsters! I'm a Navy reserve myself, and done my share of fast crafts, patrol ships, LSTs and merchant vessels so I roger that on the color of lights after sundown.(...particularly when some idiot newbie leaves the hatch wide open to the bridge - blinding the duty watch there for the hour!)
Thing is I remember usually Amber or Red(during Ops) But at a space so massive such as carrier's hanger, Red isn't too easy to see in.. but it'll make sense though especially being a warship and such.

So looks like I'll use a combination of lights - White : for day & for "showing off" the interior". Amber & /or Red : for realism of night ops.
However I still don't figure the logic behind both white and red/amber lights being turned on as in the photo I posted....and others I've seen?

I was on the Lexington, and the Kennedy.
Believe me, I've tripped over many tie down chains in the hanger bay under the red lights. But the bigger hazard was simply walking into one of the flying surfaces, wing edges, stabilizers etc. Saw quite a few guys heading to sick bay or being brought to sick bay for some pretty good gashes and knobs on the noggin.
I took to carrying my EverReady, water proof, explosion proof Navy issue flashlight at night, equipt with the red lens, when traveling around at night.

Dave, about the tripping over things..I hear you... some things don't really change.. But not as bad as you guys had it.. Luckily we have nothing the size close to carriers, so less to trip over?? But we still manage to!

But seriously you must have seen your fair share of action/combat?

When I was on a carrier 18 years ago (Forrestal) Most of the lighting was amber on the flight deck. During barricade drills white lights would light up the whole aft portion of the flight deck. In the hanger amber lights were also used most of the time but occationally red were used. In port they would use the flouresent lights.

Thank you for that info Jim... It'll all be very very useful for my present project as well as my future own BIG E build.
