Chip, every painting of a U-boot I have seen is either a light or a medium grey or a combination. I would use those exact colors if I was doing one. If you use the two tone keep in mind the Kreigsmarine likes jagged rather than wavy camoflauge. Squadron did a book U-boots in action and one on the Kreigsmarine, if you can find either of those it might help.
