There are numerous ship scales, but the most popular seem to be 1/350 or 1/700. Heller has a large range in 1/400 too. Most after market PE sets are either 1/350 or 1/700, but there is, again a large range of scales out there. I suggest 1/350 for size and detail, but if space is a concern, go with 1/700. Cheers!

Chief hit the nail ont the head.. 1/350 and 1/700 seem to be the two most popular. It depends on how much detailing, which ship, and your budget. Most AM sets are geared to the 1/350 and 1/700 scales are are easy to find and some are affordable.. HTH

700 also has the most variety. The Revell 720 size also fits fairly close in so you can do modern carriers otherwise you only have lots of Japanese and a few renderings of some famous batteships. though the American 700 stuff is starting to get more prevalent wit some of the heavy cruisers showing up at reasonable prices. Though I'll tell ya the priceson these gems are outrageous. I remeber when I first bought a Tamiya Yamato....$4. in 1980 a decided to do it again think it was $10 or I got it on sale for less than that can't remember

Airfix do some warships in 1/600 scale. Whilst not quite as sharp as most of the Japanese kits they are reasonably priced [at least they are here in Britain] and they can build into decent looking models.
