Al: I did a review of the " Ting Yuan" somewhere here at MSW's. If I remember correctly that ship had two steam propelled MTB's on board.
Hi Jan, thank you sir!

Thanks for the info Jan, that type of torpedo boat would really make an interesting model in 1/35. Al

May 6th update:
Progress has been slow due to a few days spent in Deventer. The bridge is built and grounded and I am now painting the remaining dazzle camo. I have also started adding the deck fittings. Finally work on the torpedoes has commenced:

Thanks Alan, it's a very nice model to build. I am really enjoying the detail and fit that Italeri have managed to create this time.

Hi Julian,

I meant to ask, what did you use for a wash on the hull? Mine still looks too clean , but I didn't want to over do it.

Thanks

'Gmorning Alan, the oil dot technique In this case Paynes grey, Napels yellow, black and white. The chipping at the bow I described in the blog. Still needs some scratches and stains but very nearly there. Oh yes, nearly forgot, the smoke stains are Tamiya smoke with an overspray of matt varnish. Might add some more staining using using Vallejo smoke whisch has a more brownish tinge.

Thank you very much Keith. This model very nearly falls together, no problems at all so far. Working on the "fish" and some glazing for the wheelhouse :

The two girders that support the torpedo brackets are very industrial and heavy, very nearly WW II Russian elegance...........................................

Hurrah! After a looooooooong wait,I finally received my kit a few days ago. I started by adding the transom plate to the hull and the fit was excellent. Julian, did you or Alan have a problem with fitting the hull strakes? I got a tight fit along the top edge, but I ended up with a large gap underneath. It's nothing a little putty won't fix. The wheelhouse and midships deck house were next. The only modification made so far was to drill a hole in the teardrop shaped exhaust outlets, and add a section of tubing to represent the actual exhausts. I did the same for the bilge outlet just aft of the exhausts. I don't think I will be attempting to do the amount of scratch building that Alan did. But, I may do the forward cabin, or I might just box in the openings below the skylights, so that you aren't looking into an empty hull. Julian, the camoflauge looks terrific and is very tempting. Al

Hi Al, glad to hear your boat arrived
Yes, the strakes need some coaxing to make them fit but it is a minor niggle.
I was very disappointed with Italeri's "Biber" midget submarine but the MAS wipes the slate clean, this is a joy to build.
How about a blog? It will be interesting to see how you build the MAS.
Julian

Just love the "clear-view screens" :

Platform between torpedo brackets fitted too:

I am really quite happy with the kit myself. That is the great thing about the internet and sites like this. You can get a very good idea of what to expect from a kit before you buy it. Blogs like yours, and Alan's, help other builders immeasurably. They provide information, inspiration, and warning of any potential pitfalls or problems. I'll have to think about starting a Blog of my own, though. I am a dinosaur when it comes to computers. Luckily my son is very good at it, it's his line of work, and he doesn't mind helping out the 'old man', at least not too much. Al

Hi Mark, thank you sir ! There is another build of this little Italian trouble maker online here that had accomodation, engine room and fuel bay scratch built. Very nice work. This is a quick and dirty OOB build .

Wasn't really need to sign a truce with Italeri Jan, they turn out some very nice models,( i built their S-100 in 1/35th and loved it). I was horrified that the "Beaver" was such a dog. Eventually I had fun with it and an imaginary camo and you turned it into miniature masterpiece but other offerings from Italeri are very much superior to their "Biber"
cheers,
Julian
