H.M.S. Belfast is a cruiser. She was restored as a floating museum after being re-purchased from India. I've been on board her a couple of times and is well worth a visit. She was built as a 'heavy cruiser' with the real job of convoy escort. Apart from that..I don't control a lot about her... Thanks for the compliment Martin, but naval vessels are not my field of expertise at all, and I probably know more about the naval war in the Pacific than the Royal Navy... Considering most of my mother's side of the family served in the RN from time immemorial this is somewhat embarassing..... Jim

Hi guys, HMS Belfast was one of the "Town" class cruisers and launched in 1938. She was armed with twelve 6-in guns in triple turrets and displaced 13,000 tons. Early in the war she had a large part of her keel ripped out by a mine and it was touch and go whether to repair her. It was decided that she would be repaired and refitted with the latest radar and other equipment and became a major unit of the Royal Navy's fleet of cruisers. I was lucky enough to do the tour and it is one impressive ship. One memory I still have is of the engine room, I felt claustrophobic and there were only a couple of people there, what must it have been like when fully manned and in action?

JUst a mild correction here. A boat is something that rides on a ship.
