Adam,
Thanks for your reply. Your answers were most helpful toward my decision making.
Just a few more questions, if I may?
- How did you cut out the bulkheads on the well decks?
- How thick was the styrene you used to scratch build the annexes?
- On the forecastle deck, it doesn’t seem as though you ground down that V shaped splash wall tapering back from the #1 hatch to make way for the decking. Did you not like the PE one that came in the Academy box?
- Which crane, ladders, and compass tower sets did you use, Tom’s or Academy’s?
- How do you bend those delicate PE parts correctly, accurately, and safely?
- Did you airbrush everything? (I don't have one of those)
The deck chairs do say 1/350 but the supplier sold them as 1/400. I suppose the scale is close enough as they are small enough anyway. They come 40 per set.
I read on TMRA (see link below) that fly fishing line at either a 6/0 or 8/0 thickness was the best to use for the stay lines for the 1/350, so I thought that the smaller 8/0 would be good for the 1/400. What did you settle on?

Thanks for the invaluable info,
Jerry
P.S. I guess I’ll be needing to get some primer for the Tom’s PE.

- How did you cut out the bulkheads on the well decks?
using a standard xatco no.11 blade an a number of small scour lines. the corners of the cuts were pre drilled with 1mm bit to allow for blade alignment, the inside corners were tidied with the same blad and all sabded with a normal sanding pad

- How thick was the styrene you used to scratch build the annexes?
I don't know as it was bits left over in the scrap box - but I think its about 1 - 1.5mm thick (doesnt really matter how thick it is as long as it holds its shape - if you want a "free" piece of styrene , check out the lid of your ice cream tub in the freezer)

I screwed up. I marked on my plans for it to be removed, and then subsequently forgot to remove it. Then passed a point of no return as I had at that point trimmed and cut my timber deck when I realised. SO now I have to say I like the fat overscaled one thats cast poorly onto the deck......

- Which crane, ladders, and compass tower sets did you use, Tom’s or Academy’s?
I used nearly all of Academy's parts you list EXCEPT the cranes - I used Toms. Tom's funnel stands for the funnels are incorrect BUT alot easier to assemble than the academy ones so I usewd them too. Academy has lots of different little ladders on their PE set and I think Tom's has several long spare ladders you cut to length as needed. By the way - Assemble the cranes as follows - make the tower and bases, paint them, install the lever decks and ladders, glue in place THEN install the crane stands where appropriate THEN install the actual crane arms last of all! Its near impossible to get the angle of the crane arm at the level you want it to rest on the stand in a sub assembly. I had to pull all on my crane arms off and reset, if you look closely the two cranes on the aft well deck are still pointing skywards (they should be resting on the stands)

- How do you bend those delicate PE parts correctly, accurately, and safely?
Years of practice, loads of cursing and swearing, and having a spare set of pe handy (Tom's) just in case. I have a hold n fold PE bending tool I bought specifically for this kit - but I usually build complex dioramas andjustify the expense by the fact that most models I build have several sheets of PE and there are several models on one diorama! I should of bought one years ago. The TRMA website you linked to has an article on using the PE sets on titanic

- Did you airbrush everything? (I don't have one of those)
I airbrushed the hull, and the well deck brown, the yellow stripe and the funnels. I also did a bit of a no-no and airbrushed the sprues then touched up after assembly with a brush. Howevere the main colours of white are aerosol anyways so that does'nt hurt - and a can of falt black wouldnt hurt if you can afford it, but you will have to brush the funnels and if I offer any advice it would be prime them white first then paint the sandy yellow on in very thin layers to avoid brush strokes.

Good luck with the deck chairs - even I wont tackle those!

I bought a combination of both. I am waiting on mine from America as we speak (Australia here). I bought mostly 8/0 but used 0.25mm jewelery cotton for the funnel stays and I am regretting it - I know that 8/0 stuff is going to be super fine and make the stays look massively oversized ! I can see me cutting them off yet and redoing them! oh the humanity!

I hope that helps! I am happy to answer whatever you have.
Thanks for taking an interest in my model

Great work Adam, I look forward to seeing this at the SAPMA Model Expo this year. I have several of the Academy 1/400 kits, both the standard release and the Deluxe version they released a few years back so this is all interesting and excellent work.
Of course, it is all in my case getting brave enough to start my Amati 1/250 scale Titanic as well!:)
Cheers
Tony

Hi Adam
You have inspired me such that I have just purchased the Centenary Version and will shortly be starting to build it. This is going to be my winter project.
I can't help notice that you have not posted lately and I am hoping you will be continuing to guide us beginners through to completion.
I have enjoyed every one of your posts so far and would like to thank you for all that you have shared with us.

Hello Adam:
I am enjoying reading your build. I have the 1/350 version, built one about 30 years ago and want to do another one. Your build is quite inspiring and I am already gathering reference material for such things as wood decks. Your build will be referenced when I get ready to do mine. Thanks for sharing your build. Great photo's, great commentary and most of all outstanding work.

You just peel the backing off the planks and if you want put a little bit of cement on the deck ( not too much ) and then paste it on
