Warship models very in scale from the micro 1/2400 scale up thru 1/72 scale. Thats a wide selection! Why do we choose the scales we do?
I build in all scale from 1/700 thru 1/350, with 1/700 being my most popular. I have built 75 warships in 1/700 scale. Reasons being that they offer the largest selection of kits, and they are the most affordable and take up less room. If I had a choice, I would build all ships in 1/350, I love um! But realy in injected plastic there are only a few kits out there, and most companies duplicate each other on there subjects. So in 1/350 that only leaves about 15 kits. We need more Trumpeter and Panda!
!/400 scale is popular in europe, and I have built most of the kits availabe, which by the way is a wider selection then 1/350 offers at this date. Heller, Taurro Mazur all offer good kits.
So for me, selection and display space steers me to the 1/700 scale ship kits, though at this time I am building in the 1/350 scale, and have Tamiya's IJN Yamoto about 75 % complete. I build all navy's in the WW-2 era so 1/700 is my choice!
So what scale(s) does everybody build in ?

Cheers mates,
Garry

As someone just getting into ship building I have gone for 1/700. The reasons being they are affordable, don't take up a lot of space when finished, and there is a larger selection of different kits. I would love to go for a 1/350 kit but they are out of my price range right now.
However if Santa is reading this.............. (:-)

This is a loaded question. What do I BUILD in? 1/350. That's because so far I've only built the 1/350 Banner USS Arizona. What scale would I LIKE to build in? Like you I'd LIKE to build in nothing but 1/350 but money and room are in short supply. I'm really thinking about trying a 1/700 just to see if I can get any decent detail out of it. I plan on buying the old 1/600 HMS Warspite because it's the only game in town when it comes to the Warpsite.

I build 1/35 scale armor, and 1/72 & 1/48 scale aircraft. When it comes to shipbuilding, which I am just getting into, 1/700 has been my choice, for reasons of space, cost, and diversity of subject matter. The 1/350 kits are great, but costly, and where do you put them when finished? I love the look of the 1/35 Leopolds, but haven’t purchased one, for the same reasons. I think I would need to put an addition on my house if I really got into those larger scaled kits.

Hi there mlb63!

I just bought a Warspite on eBay for my first ship kit. What PE does it 'need'. Do you have any tips on building the kit?

Thanks
Andy

The name of this website IS ARMORama, how ever I am sure you were asking what ship scale do I build. A long time ago I built up a huge collection of 1:700. I moved them around 4-5 times....successfully I might add but then came the big move from Alabama to Texas so I gave them away. I did keep my 350 scale Yamato which I carried on the back window ledge of my car. She is still with me, in fact recently I went back and added a little PE to her. I have added a Tirpitz, Missouri, Arizonz, and Essex. I have on the blocks a Hornet and Enterprise to go. Yes Sir...that 350 scale is the way to go...I'll make the room for those beauties

I started in the 1/350 scale when I was a kid when there was only tamiya kits, I saw a scale ships magazine when I was young that had the USS Enterprise and the New Jersey I was so impressed that I got one for christmas that year and me and my dad built it and been a ship lover ever since.

I use to build in what ever scale I could find. Now I am trying to standardize with 1/350 and 1/700 for modern warships. I have 1/350 kits of the USS Arizone and Tennessee. In 1/700 all I have now is the USS Nashville, an Austin Class LPD. In civil war ironclads I am building 1/196, as that is about it, if you want any detail.
