Assembly? Painting? Detailing?
After alot of thought for me, I would have to say that research and reference gathering takes up most of my time on my ship builds. Followed secondly by adding all the PE parts from a set. Specialy if it is a WEMS pe set! But I spend alot of hours researching my subjects before and during my build. And I find that, that is half of the fun in building warships!
So what takes up most of your time ?

Defiantly Assmbly, and sanding/puttying/sanding.

After that, it is all down hill.

On ships...definitely the PE. On tanks it is the research, I like to diorama them so I usually look for a particular paint scheme to go with my planned subject. The ships paint schemes I have found (I build 350 scale) seem to be quite accurate.

Well for me between The kids, wife,the honey do list, and the holidays the longest part for me is to find the time of an hour or two that is uninterrupted. #:-)
Seriously though I like the Painting, Detailing bending the Pe, assembling and watching the Ship "grow" What I dislike the most is masking. I always and I mean always forget to tighten something down and bang overspray

What takes the most time? Not sure really, but what feels the longest, is the figures for a vehicle or a diorama. The building, filling, painting, and detail painting are all fun, but when it comes to the figures I try so hard to improve that it becomes a chore and gets drawn out. But I could never build something without a figure ...... for me its what brings the whole thing to life. And a well painted figure means a lot!

On the one ship I'm working on - USS Forrestal - super-detailing the air wing!
I bought 2 extra Saratogas' off ebay (real cheap) just to get extra planes for the deck of Forrestal. Hollowing out jet intakes and exhausts, detailing landing gear, scratchbuilding an E2-C Hawkeye- the ship with PE is going to be a breeze in comparison
