I thought I'd share some screen shots of the new 1/72nd kit from Revell of Germany. As a little kid, I watched the real boat be pulled across the Outer Drive in Chicago in September of 1954, and have been aboard her at least 50 times. I think Revell hit a home run similar to the VII C kit and the after market offerings should be many. See if you agree:

Now that they have one in 1:72 scale, which will do well for both static
modelers and the RC gang, a 1:144 scale should not be far behind.
This is what happened when they released the Type VIIC and C/41s.

...oops ,don't what to start a rumor....yet!

Cheers,
Joe

I'm really surprised at how quickly the EBay route works. I contacted a vendor from Cambridgeshire UK on Sunday evening, 1 December, ordered one kit, and it arrived in Louisville, Kentucky this morning December 3rd, is in Indianapolis Indiana at noon today and I'll probably have it tomorrow PM! The vendors here in the U.S. are saying late January before they'll have any in stock.

I'm hoping the aftermarket folks are working on PE sets and wooden decks for this kit, as well as RC applications.

No deck gun?

Were Type IX's usually without them?

Hi Michael,
the type IX boats had deck guns, but they were removed later. As you can read here the kit is the later U-505 with modified tower, improved AA-guns and without the deck guns.

Interesting stuff from CMK, looking at the write up from revel, does that suggest an early type IX with a deck gun as well??

SI,
I don't know what CMK is thinking, but my guess would be some changes in the aft anti aircraft gun with options for a twin or quad mount. I have a picture of U 183 in 1943 with the Turm III tower and a 10.5 CM cannon on the foredeck, so we'll just have to wait and see. The other offerings seem to be more for a detailed interior, but since it is the U-5o5, and there are many color photos of the interior, I'm sure that might be a popular building option. What this kit needs in the near future however, is replacement decks in both wood and metal. I'd sure like an option which included opening the deck over the torpedo storage containers.

Anyway its now back to opening up all the hull vents, a tedious, but necessary task.

Glad I read this post...I will be grabing one of these boats for sure. I have the first VII type and was thinking about how to build it in captured setting, but with this XI it makes things much nicer.

The Type IX's are truly beautiful in real life, and in Revell's kit form. I think you will enjoy one of these beastly hulls Mike

Someone IS making a PE set for this boat and it includes a full deck! I am in contact with him, and he is close to making it available:
http://www.rcsubs.cz/index.php/models/models/69-typ-ix

Eduard has 3 PE sets for this boat: 53106, 53107, 53108. (The first 53106 is currently available at Eduard shop, other 2 in February, though no idea what is on them).

Cheers, all!

Just give it a month or two Sean and you will be able to get it cheaper from Hong Kong or China.

I am sure you have some other things to build in the meantime.

Hahaha well Warren plenty here to build & complete my friend.

I have a source here in New Zealand that can supply at a reasonable price & is ultra reliable so all good.

But I will keep an eye on the Asian suppliers as well.

Cheers

Just got mine today. Am a bit disappointed as the hull is in 4 pieces rather than 2. The deck separtion point would have been better under the conning tower to minimise the seam line. Looks like this one could use a metal deck and a deck gun aftermarket items. Some new crew figures would be nice. Well just like the VII, time will more than likely bring us a major slew of after market goodies. I see CMK is planning a complete interior for it.

I received my first set of Eduard PE today, pretty extensive treatments for the torpedo tubes, tube doors, thru-hull openings, lookout platforms, deck fittings, hatch hardware etc. The fret is nicely done and is a starting point. FreeTime got it to me within a couple days of ordering, but I notice they're on back order now. Still waiting for someone to offer a deck, PE or wood, and with the large limber holes on this sub, an upper pressure hull to take up that space under the decking. At least I've got some building I can do.

Thom. Do you have any detailed info from CMK...Be very very interested to find out what all they plan to have with their exterior detail set and weapons set. I really really want a deck gun. Also a metal deck as looking at the plastic one it would be a nightmare trying to cut those groves out of it. Figure to do a scratch on teh pressure hull like i saw with the Tpe V11 using the drinking straws

Steve

Glenn Cauley posted a CG prototype of an interior section on the AMP website http://models.rokket.biz/index.php?topic=1121.0, and there is a pre-order status on Artwox somewhere online, I thought I saw it on WEM. Jason at FreeTIme tells me that Artwox and Nautilus are just about ready to pop on wooden decks. I'm going to buy a deck set from Oto at http://www.rcsubs.cz/index.php/models/models/69-typ-ix. By the middle of February, I suspect there will be a ton of accessories out there.
