Hi.
Thought I post my new project here.
Never did a ship before so I'm eager to learn that.
Ship I'm building is a Coaster from Artitec.
Noordborg Delfzijl is full resin 1/87 scale model.
Some fine PE and a little tubing from stryrene go with the kit.
She was waiting for me over 4 years to get me started. Last Friday I gave it go and this is stage I came up to now.
Comments and useful tips are very welcome.

Some pictures.

It's a challenge to work with resin in this scale. Needs a lot of cleaning and the fit isn't that good. Main reason it took so long to get started on this one. But my skills developed over the years and after nearly one week she's coming along quite well.

Hope you all enjoy the pictures.

Regards,

Robert Jan

Very nice Robert! One of the best rust jobs I've seen in a long time - and that's saying something on this forum!

Thanks Troy.
During the last week I asked myself why it took so long to get this started. I had some very bad experiences with resin over the last years. But patience and skills, one gets over the years made me start on this last Friday as mentioned. And I just love it.
But painting resin models is even more fun. I've allways loved the rusty ships in harbors. Details in resin are good and do allow to do some heavy chipping and weathering.
Busy on the rigging for the 2 masts. I'm cleaning the blocks and make tiny holes to attach them.
Tonight rest of the cabin gets a paintjob, also the masts.

Robert Jan

Hi Simon.
I'm busy to get updates this weekend. The rigging is a real . But I'm satisfied with the results so far(2 hours work to get one mast ready)
Now to find me some hooks to lift some from the ship.

When you've completed her, maybe you can share your techniques with us. I would love to be able to make a ship look like yours!

Hi.
First thing to do, get a small plan on colourscheme.
Work from the instructionsheets or get some pictures.
Working with resin, as mentioned is sometimes a hazard in fitting problems, you love it or not.
But, also mentioned this before, painting, chipping, weathering and further detailing is big fun.
I used a simple primer/basecoat in grey to cover the hull and other massive structures on this ship.

The hull.
After drying over a period of several days I covered the whole surface with a thin layer of gloss pale grey. Trackrustwash from AK interactive, together with some rusty pigments as a second layer. Fixation with hairspray to do some chipping. Final colour comes up, gloss pale grey again.
Chipping and painting, I think those techniques are known, until your satisfied with the result.
Important in my way of painting is fixation. Step by step, layer over layer, I use hairspray or some lacquer.
The experimental me is using all kind kins of material to scratch and apply, remove and color again.

Cabin and other structures.

Same story, but the only difference is to keep it cleaner, thinner. Rigging is made of copper wire.

Story will continue. When you have questions, feel free to ask.

Geweldig Robert-Jan,
Groninger kustvaart op zijn best
Great build, reminds me of an old Dutch coaster I photographed in Kavalla, Greece years ago. The coaster was just as rusty as your build. I'll see if I can find the photo and post it here.
Cheers,
Julian

Hangar Queen she was. Not on of Artitecs best resinkits I think. A compliment from me to your work Julian. I admire your work. It´s a different way of modelling I´m used to do.
Photo would be welcome to detail even more on the rigging and masts.

Hi Robert-Jan,
here are the photos. The first was taken in Preveza, (not Kavalla, me bad),this is an old coaster that evidently had been laid up without work or owner. The second photo was taken in Katakolon, the ship here had an engineroom fire that spread to the accomodation. Two different types of rust:

As you can see your rusting is spot on ! Excellent work.

The photos were taken working for Smit-Lloyd doing supply, towing and anchor handling for a drilling ship on the west coast of Greece and later doing straight supply work for a Penrod rig near Thassos on the east coast of Greece.

Thanks for the compliments Kev. Hope to finish most of the work this weekend. Tuesday another challenge will drop on my doorstep, so...

After a lazy weekend, didn't work that much on the ship, this morning things went quite allright.
Some final rigging to be done on the second mast, install the achors and the 8 stairs to get to several decks. Very fine PE to solder, so this will be a job for tonight. When ready I'll have some little paintwork to fix to call it done.

Some pictures

Hope you all enjoy.

That is a good storage solution Robert Jan, might be a good idea for my collection that is slowly filling all shelves at home and the sauna

Hi Julian.
The Noordborg wasn't the best kit ever. But after taking her to the workbench after 4 years it was real fun to build.
Also a Harbortug is finished now. This will be shown together with the Noordborg.
My 'ship' leaves The Netherlands in about 7 weeks from now.
Exit Holland - Enter Thailand (Bangkok).
New job - house - future.
So a sell off on MP of all my builds ( most train related ) is a daytime activity right now.

Cheers,

Toe maar Robert Jan,
een enorme verandering voor jou in het verschiet.
Niet de slechtste locatie waar je naar toe kan verhuizen overigens. Veel succes toegewenst in Thailand
Maar, wel nog de fotos online zetten

Komt goed Julian.

Groeten,

Robert Jan
