Hi,
does anyone know the exact height of the Airfix S-Boat when completed, from the bottom of the hull to the top of the mast? Both on and off the included stand would be great. The box only gives me a length and width. I've tried working it out myself, but the general bad fit of the kit usually means it pops apart as soon as take a ruler to it!
I need to get a display case to fit mine in when it's finished so want to know that something of the right size is available and if I'm best ditching the kits stand and making my own.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

I've heard that a good rule of thumb for ship model cases is to add an inch to each end for every foot in model length, but I also like to actually see what a case might look like before committing to specific dimensions. So to help visualize the end result I usually make display case mock-ups from paper while the model is still being built. It looks dopey, but it gives me confidence that I'll know what it will look like when I order the real case!

That's not a bad idea. If I can get it to stay together long enough to hold together with elastic bands and tape to get some measurements I'll give it a go.

Hello Stephen,

The measurement of my build from hull bottom to top of mast
is 7 1/4 inches.

I mounted the boat on 1 inch brass tubing and left 2 inches
above the mast for final the case measurements.

Also as mentioned, leave some space in front of the boat and
at stern when taking measurements for the total length, this
allows for some comfort spacing, should you want to mount
any flags, badges, specs etc.

I have left 3 inches on either end for this purpose...you
may want to leave less...it's up to you.

Awesome. Just what I needed to know. I think I'll give myself a height of about 10" to work with, that should be plenty. I just hope I can get something that it will fit in.
Thanks for the help.

Joe,
just had a good look at your impressive build. It's given me some ideas of what will need improving. The most obvious are those awful molded on ropes and a better idea of where and how the anchor should attach.
Was the roof swastika a common marking?

Hi Stephen,

The National insignia was an early war feature and was later eliminated.

The most important mod you should consider is a starboard
bridge door and redo those awful depth charge racks from
the kit.

Also addition of the observation towers will improve the
boats look.

Also, are you familiar with this site?

Excellent photos to help you along.

Any other questions, I will be glad to help.

Cheers,
Joe
