Michael -

I don't know if you are looking for kits or plans. If you want plans, try this site:

Hope this helps.

Editors, can we make an official forum site for the Ancient Sailing Ships Campaign?

Brent,

All it takes to make an 'Official' campaign thread is to create another thread in the Campaign forums with 'OFFICIAL' in its subject line. Typically they get created by the Campaign creator/manager (you in this case) on the first day of (or day before) the campaign.

Since it will undoubtedly come up sooner or later, what definition of “Age of Discovery” will we use to determine the end of our date range? There are several options available:

1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue;
1516 when de Solís led the Spanish fleet down the east coast of S. America as far as Río de la Plata
1565 when the Spanish conquered the Philippines
1595 when Dutch merchant/explorer Jan Huyghen van Linschoten published his report including directions on how to navigate between Portugal and Japan.
1611 when Henry Hudson explored the region around present-day New York City and the Hudson River in search of the Northwest Passage

I don't have a personal preference - does anybody else?

I'm thinkimg prior to 1492. After that year it gets pretty messy as evidenced by your examples. This still leaves a broad range of topics. I too would like to see a junk or even better an early Korean turtle ship. Just my $0.02.
Thanks

I agree with John; 1492 is the big date for the Age of Discovery. Easy to remember too.

Works for me. Because of the relative scarcity of period documentation, maritime architectural history from this time period tends to be a bit fuzzy with regards to when certain types of ships first appeared, so it's kind of a moot point anyway. I've witnessed people arguing over things even more ridiculous on this forum, so I figured we should get it out of the way

When I proposed this Ancient Sailing Ships Campaign I was thinking prior to 1492. When Columbus returned from his first voyage of discovery the modern Age of Discovery began. Thanks for asking, your humble host.

With the plastic Junk kits I've found, the difficulty is concerning with the century they are from. Some kits state it and others don't, so I've been doing a crash course (on-line, of course) of identifying Junks and the dynasty they are from.

I'd need to do a design that is from the Yuan Dynasty or before (the Ming Dynasty sort of straddles late 14th to early 15th centuries).

I'm actually eyeing some balsa wood kits of Song Dynasty Junks right now.
