Would anyone be up to an Ancient Ships Campaign covering anything up through the Renaissance but prior to the Age of Discovery?

He Brent,
I've never participated in a campaign before but this one peaks my interest. I have a couple of small scale kits of a bireme and a viking ship that would fit the bill so count me in.
Thanks
John

John, that makes two of us. My ship collection runs to extremes, subs and sailing ships. I have an Academy 1/72 Scale Roman Warship that I would like a good reason to build.

I have built the old 1/150 scale Roman Warship. Count me in for the campaign. I would like to do something Egyptian but I do not think that anyone makes a kit for one of those. Scratchbuild time

When I posted this I didn't expect to go down this trail, but there are an abundance of kits and plans out there for all kinds of ancient craft from Hawaii to India and everywhere in between. We can get out of the plastic zone on a campaign like this!

Hello, I've submitted the request to the editors for a year long research operation campaign starting in October 2015 and running through October 2016. "The Ancient Sailing Ship Campaign is a historical research and construction campaign covering the period from the earliest recorded history of sailing ships through the Renaissance and ending prior to the Age of Discovery. Participants are encouraged to engage in research of their subject ship model in order to as accurately as possible portray it. Build photos, documentation, links and other information on their ship is encouraged."
1. Post a photo of the kit, or plans and materials prior to beginning your project.
2. Post at least one in progress photo of your build. Blogs are encouraged. Include descriptions of what you have done and learned.
3. Post two photos of the completed Ancient Sailing Ship model in the campaign gallery. One ribbon will be awarded for completion of the campaign. Multiple builds are encouraged.
4. Only one Ancient Sailing Ship Campaign ribbon will be awarded upon completion of the campaign.

I drew up a proposed Ancient Sailing Ships Campaign Ribbon. Your thoughts.

Hi Brent,
The time period works for me and I like the ribbon.
Thanks

Very nice ribbon and framework for the campaign, Brent. I like the 'Pre-Age-of-Discovery caveat.

It's a nice change from the steel ladies that are usually the principal subjects.

Michael, thank you for your observation. I suggested this campaign to help us break free from the 20th-21st Century campaigns. What better excuse to build a real wooden ship model!

As soon as we get a few more folks to declare their interest, I will await Todd's blessing and then post this in the campaign folder.

Fantastic idea for a campaign Brent! Not sure it really warranted me "blessing it" but of course you have it!

Grip=N-Rip Fellas!!

I am already up to my eyeballs in wooden stuff at the moment...the SOS build mainly, but maybe there is something small I can pick up to ave a go with!! Will have a look-see!

Thanks but it seems a little on the pricey side for my budget. Looks like scratchbuilt will be the way for me.

Grant scratch-built would be great. It is amazing what can be done with balsa and basswood. I've used the North Eastern basswood for some of my model railroad buildings.

Hey All,

In prepping for this campaign I've ordered some 6mm (about 1/300 scale) Early Roman Auxiliary Infantry pewter wargaming figures from Baccus Ltd, UK. Reviews I've read of the figures say they run slightly larger, around 7mm. This makes their size very close (enough for me anyway) to the 1/220 and 1/240 scales of the two small ships I hope to build for this campaign. The figures look very much like the bas reliefs of Roman Marines on Trajan's column among others, and they are generic enough that I can convert a few into vikings. And with 96 figures in the pack I'll have some to practice on.

Hope we get some interested folks. I think this is going to be fun and something really different.

John, good to hear about your find, I found a set of Roman sailors in 1/72 http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=288 for the Roman Warship.

Depending on timing, ie. as long as it doesn't interfere with other campaigns, I'm in. I've wanted to have a good reason to do something other than haze grey for a while.

Count me in too! My work on the subject is usually focused around restoring antique wooden ship models but I've gathered a lot of research material in the process which may be of help to campaign participants. If I can be of service, I will be happy to contribute.

Hmmm....if I can find a pre-15th century Junk model (Yuan Dynasty and previous).....

Hard to tell with the Junk ships I've seen. The basic design has changes so little of the centuries.
