After the quick hull assembly it has been a lot of less-than-exciting parts clean up over the past few days: 64 shields, 32 oars, a two-part mast, a spar, and numerous other assorted bits and pieces... but this really is a nicely designed kit. The dragon head, for example, is apparently inspired by a real one from the 5th Century – pretty cool:

Plus, Revell’s molded-in wood grain detail is phenomenal!

I’m excited to get this bad boy painted up...

Hi Tim,
You're right, that wood grain really looks good. Really looking forward to seeing it painted. I had a question when I was working on my long ship that I thought I would ask you and the other campaign members. It concerns the number of shields hung on the ship sides. You mentioned there are 64 shields and 32 oars in the kit. I know 32 shields would be for the oarsmen. Would the long ship have been able to take on an additional 32 warriors without swamping the ship? The long ships had low freeboard anyway so I was just curious. Maybe they took turns rowing and had two crews for propulsion. Who knows? Anyway really lloking to your next progress report.

John,
That's an interesting question. 64 warriors on that small ship does sound like a lot; maybe each guy had a primary and a spare shield? I know I'd sure hate to have my shield split or otherwise lost and be without one while out raiding!

Tim,
That sounds reasonable. Maybe that's why they give 2 decals of each of 32 designs for the shields. Two shields per man. Maybe one for action to port and one to starboard! Who said Vikings had no sense of humor! I know on my build I went with one shield per oarsman, mainly due to me trying to go blind painting designs by hand on shields only 3mm in diameter. Really looking forward to this build.

The Viking longship “wood” parts now have their Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow acrylic base coat. Other than that the only color is the Tamiya XF-63 German Grey for the “iron” bits – shield bosses, figurehead mounts, and mast hardware. I’ll let the paint cure for a couple of days, and then do a streaky wash with Grumbacher Raw Umber artist's oil to bring out the wood grain.

I have managed to make a hash of the Egyptian ship. I will need to tear apart most of the hull and rebuild. There is no way that I will be able to make October 1 so I am dropping out of the campaign

Hi Grant,
I'm sorry you're having to drop out. I don't have any knowledge of the Egyptian boat building techniques. Your work looks good to me. Could you educate us on what is wrong with your build?
Thanks

Hi John -
The photo looks OK because it is from 3 foot distance :-)
Basically, I managed to put that upper deck on the wrong end! I will revisit this in the future but I have a few other projects on the go right now.

Grant,
Thanks for the enlightenment. I never would have known. You've done good work. I don't think I could ever tackle a model where I had to fabricate each part before assembly. I hope you're able to post some of your other builds.
Good luck.

Hi Grant,
That's a bummer about your Egyptian ship build... I've been there, and it's harder to do re-work than work! Set her aside for a while, and your modeling mojo will surely return!
best,
Tim

Tim,
Another excellent build my friend. You're right, the shields do provide a lot of color and the wood looks spot on. I really like the rigging you installed. Those butterfly blocks look great. Great job!

Thanks John!
The butterfly blocks were plastic kit parts assembled exactly per the instructions. I really appreciate it when model kit manufacturers make their instruction sheets simple and clear – that complex looking block assembly actually went together quite easily.

As the campaign host. Have the ribbons been awarded? I also need help with the gallery.
Thank you, Brent

Thanks Brent, I agree! Thanks for starting this campaign - I had fun with it.
I have no idea about the ribbons, but I set up a gallery for the Ancient Sailing Ships Campaign at

Tim, thanks for setting up the gallery. When I've hosted past Campaigns the administrator allowed me as the host to award the ribbons using the Campaign sign up page.

There doesn't appear to be a campaign officially set up. What were/are the start and end dates?
