What AM kits are you going to apply or are you building it OOB?

Dave

I ordered the Eduard PE kit. Detailed enough to make me happy without overwhelming me...I hope. I'm planning on doing the build in stages: Hull clean up and paint, main turrets, secondary turrets, super structures, etc. In between I'll work on an airplane or tank. I just don't want to get burned out by pushing too hard on the Might Mo! She's been my favorite ship since my mom bought me a book about her when I was around 10. Now, I'm hoping to get out to Hawaii in 2017 to walk her decks.

I'll consider doing a blog...but since this is my first ship since I built my shag carpet navy in the 70's I may want to just "learn" from my own mistakes. Then I may post my next ship...

Dave, great problem solving going there!

Hawaii for 3 years? Am i a little jealous? Just a bit

Will you be taking the workbench with you? Will miss your updates if you take a hiatus

Larry-welcome back to the salty side! Would be great if you did decide to share your build with us all! We're all still learning and are here to help and motivate each other

Russell,

Thanks for the comments. I learned my problem solving watching you guys build. I hope I can keep it up for the rest of this build.

I will be moving the workbench with me. There will be a small contingent go with me for the first portion of the trip and then the rest will follow a couple of months later.

Trying to plan a trip to your neck of the woods while we are there..hopefully sooner than later.

Larry, Russell is a great source for learning techniques, I know I have learned a lot from watching his builds and asking questions.

Looking to do some more work on the Yorktown this weekend.

Looks great, Dave!!

I know exactly what you are talking about by 'bending in wrong direction' - have been there frequently myself even when you are really paying attention, sometimes I think my brain mirrors the instruction and when it come to test-fitting you see that it has to be just the other way round...

But hey - three years Hawaii... I haven't bee there yet, but from all I have seen, heard and read, it should be paradise!!

Glad to hear that you are moving your shipyard as well - I would have dearly missed your build logs here!!!

Cheers,
Jan

Hi all,

While I did not have my shipyard completely assembled during the move I did send some kits and building material forward to my new Pacific base. While I was stuck in a hotel for two months I was able to work a little on the USS Yorktown.

I decided that I wanted to be able to see into the hanger bay so much of the work was removing the rolling doors that Trumpeter was so kind to mold closed.

All of the doors have been modified to meet what I was looking for.

The plane was a half attempt to see how much room it was going to take up in the hanger bay.

Now that I finished that portion of the monotony I decided I wanted to build one of the 5" single mounts that align the starboard side.

This is from the Pontos upgrade kit and far exceed the detail of the kit parts.

this is the base of the 5" mount

and this is the barrel.

I have since mounted the two parts together and will provide pictures during my next update.

As you can see the brass is blackened. I stole the idea from Luciano, which I must say thank you again. The blackened brass is much easier to work with as the glare is easier on the eyes.

I use the blackening agent that is available from Model Masters. Highly recommend.

Right now I am waiting on an additional reference book so that I can begin detailing the interior of the hanger. Hope to have another update soon..

Thanks for stopping in.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the kind comments.

More of an update, though small.

The Pontos kit is great. One thing it does is provide for quite a bit of origami.

I have begun on the stern support area.

here is the stern mid-deck:

More of the stern mid-deck parts.

Next is the blackening bath after connecting the two:

next was the upper stern deck.

Dry fitted to the stern bulkhead

Well that's it for this week.

thanks for stopping in and as always comments, suggestions, and criticism are always welcome.

Nice to see you back at it Dave and back with a vengeance by the look of it. Glad to see you found the Blacken it useful, I'm almost at the stage with my Russian radar sets that I need to get some out.

Anyway I'm taking notes for when I'm ready to start on the Tico.

Hi Dave,

Very nice work.

Question, I have never used the blackening agents. It looks like from the photos that it comes off easily?

Harry,

When you take the brass out of the blackening agent it has a fine black powder on it. The powder comes off pretty easily and what you are left with is a dark (blackened brass) part.

So far I have not had any issue with applying paint. One thing it definitely does is remove the glare associated with a lot of brass. For my eyes its a great help.

Origami on the stern under deck looks impressive.

Keep up the good wok
