Well this will be my first build log I've ever done on this site (or any site for that matter)
I'll be working on Trumpeter's USS Texas. This build will be straight out of the box. Any and all comments are welcome.

When i started this build i had already glued both hull halves and was already starting to fill the gap between the two halves.

After that got sanded down i glued the bilge keels and the propeller shafts and struts Really had a hard time placing the bilge keels since the indicators for where they were supposed to be placed was almost non-existent (or i accidentally sanded it down )

Now the ship is ready for prime time
With the primer coat:

The next update i will be drilling out the portholes and possibly paint the hull once i find the necessary paints (be paint the Texas in measure 22)

Till next time

hi,

I'm looking forward to this build, having visited it many times while living in Houston. If you need any pictures of it, I will happily post some.

Thanks Conrad.
I've actually been meaning to go and visit her but the prospect of a seven hour drive and lack of more that two days of free time is keeping me from going...

A picture that I really need is the area behind turret #3, just to see if had any railing there. A modeler whose build I followed encountered a problem in that area and I just wanted to see what the actual ship looks like in that area

Welcome, Marco. Thanks for putting a blog of your build here.

I've been contemplating that same kit so I'll be following along with this build as well.

Looking like the answer would be no for the railing just forward the #3 turret. There would have been no room for the catapult when traversing the turret.

Here is the link to the Navsouce pic above. http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/013525a.jpg If you click on the picture it will enlarge and there is no railing present on the backside of the boat deck.

The museum ship does have a railing in place as would be the case without the catapult installed...and for reasons of it being a museum ship of course!

There is a line drawing of the Texas here - http://maritime.org/doc/plans/bb34.pdf From what it looks like on page 4 shows there is no room as well.

Best of luck on the build! Looking forward to following along!

Thank you all for the kind words

Will have to agree todd, no railing. wonder how trumpeter messed that one up.

For today's update is quite small. only worked on some of the main deck stuff

As you can see some clean-up was necessary on these pieces, but nothing a knife and some sanding couldn't fix.

Here it is ready for some primer

here we have them with the primer applied and also mocked up on the ship's deck
Already for some paint. just need to find some suitable replacements for Navy Blue 5-N and Deck Blue, 20-B.

Till next time

I got her sister the New York a few days ago. I'll be following along as well. I'm sure the kits have the same positive and negative attributes.

You actually linked to New York's Booklet of General Plans (note the hull number) - Texas' is at http://maritime.org/doc/plans/bb35.pdf

With regards to "How Trumpeter got it wrong," there is actually plenty that they got wrong on this kit. Didn't stop me from buying one and enjoying what I've completed of it (so far, still in progress), but Trumpeter consistently under-researchers and under-allocates resources to improve accuracy.

Hello all, sadly i wont be able to start painting until Thursday due to the fact that the two paints i need (deck blue & navy blue) wont be in stock at the local hobby store till thursday.

While building the stuff in this update i forgot to take pics of the in-progress stuff so i only got pics of the finished (or semi-finished) parts.

the cranes

turret #'s 2,3 and 4

This is where i ran out of primer

Now this railing here was a real to get into shape due to it being mostly curved. (no straight bends at all

Till thursday then

the progress is great!

I looked through my pics of the texas, and I didn't have any of turret #3
Good luck with the rest of the build!

Hey Michael
All the PE i'm using is supplied by trumpeter as part of the kit. includes all of the railings and radars among other stuff

Hi Marco:

Glad to see someone doing a build log on this model. As Tracey noted, Trumpeter got a lot wrong, but still an enjoyable build and it does look like the Texas. I have this kit as well and will be following along with interest.

Well then the spring semester is finally over, so construction should restart by this weekend. But before that I have to find a way to remove the paint from the hull and deck without damaging the molded on detail (the hairy brush didn't do a good job of painting) Any tips?
