I've always been happiest with Gold Medal Models products.

Howdy Yellow013, I'll second what Mike said. Goldmetal models pe sets are hard to beat!

Howdy fellas,

O.K, great. An oppurtunity for me to throw a 'noob' question on the deck! I have noticed that there is a fairly significant difference in pricing between the GMM PE set and a comparative Tom's PE set. The question I guess is...is there the same "fairly significant difference" in quality?

Tread.

Oops! And, before I forget Yellow013. Since you are asking about both the Prince of Wales, and the PE set. Are you aware of the Warship Group Build going on? If not, please check out the Warship thread called "Warships of the Atlantic Conflict"!! We would all love to add you to our ranks of courageous participants! We have a fantastic crew of ship modeling fans that will elevate you modeling several fold!
Check it out.

I know GMM is great, much better than Tom's, but they are also much more money. Would you say that Tom's is ok for a beginner?

Generally, I lean towards Tom's sets. They take care of business with their sets, cranes, railings and stairs. The gold medal models provdes a bit more, but I don't think it is value for the dollar. The White Ensign Model stuff is major league, but it'll cost, in some cases as much as you paid for the kit.
