I just can't get past their practice of casting the hull in two halves like that. I suspect a LOT of clean-up, putty, and sanding, and maybe even pinning, to attach the stern and bow sections, and make the join line disappear.

I know what you mean - why would the guys at Fairy Kikaku design the models in a way that creates such unnecessary extra work? The castings themselves are relatively crude, too. On the other hand, the subjects are unique and probably easier than scratchbuilding...
