Hello Everyone.
A couple of years ago I saw an ad on one of the websites for Hasegawa'a 1/350 Hikawa Maru and three detail sets for a very good price. It was over in the USA but the price was so good I snapped it up.
The set consisted of the kit, two PE sets and the wooden deck set all Hasegawa. It has been sitting in the stash since and I decided I needed a change from the battleships I have been building lately so here we go!
First up I glued the bukheads in place then the two halves of the hull together. Then I masked the hull up and gave it its first coat of colour, Gunze H317.
Going off the box art I thought it was black but no, just a neutral grey.
I also painted all the deck s H317 to give the wooden deck something to adhere to and to paint all the deck fittings H317 again as directed.
Then I started applying the self-adhesive wooden decks.
That's just the rfirst three decks that will be glued to the hull once I have sprayed the white upper parts and hull red below the water line.
That's it for now.
Warren

Hey Warren,
nice to see someone takles the Hikawa Maru. I do have HASEGAWA´s sistership Heian Maru with all the PE-parts and a wooden deck.
You will be busy if you really want to use up all the etched parts and will do the full rigging, hehe...
I will follow your build with great interest!
Cheers

Good Start, Warren.
I have a couple in my stash, so I will be watching.
The wood deck looks better than I thought.

Warren,
are you sure the grey color is correct? I did watched an walkthrough of the Hikawa Maru at Youtube and the ships outside is black or at least a very dark grey...

Hi Thomas.
One of the reasons for doing this one is that the PE sets are pretty basic compared to others I have tackled lately!
One PE set that I can't work out why it is there is the one that came with the wooden deck set. It adds no texture or detail so I am not sure why I would use it.
We shall see..

Hi Harry.
It has almost come to the stage where I wouldn't build a ship model that had wooden decks if I couldn't get one of the decks for it. They add a level of fidelity that I like very much.

Unless it is a problem with the instructions Gunze H317 is the colour used. Even the full size painting guide provided with the ship shows a medium grey in that area. Maybe at different times in the ships history it had a different colour on the hull.

If they can give us a ship like this they can surely give us a secret German Raider like Atlantis

Hmmm.. Thomas you may be correct. I had a look at the painting guide again and Hasegawa in their infinite wisdom decided to use a grey colour to substitute for black in the diagrams. They also used two fairly close greys to illustrate Medium Grey, H317, and Semi-Gloss Black!
Oh wait a second, that's right, a good excuse, the grey is just an undercoat...
Cheers

Off to a great start Warren! I had a blast building one of these a few years back. Didn't have the wood deck at the time....which looks excellent btw! Looking forward to following along!

Hi Russell
Well I have had this one sitting around since the nuce man from L'arsenal sold me the set for a bargain price, and this break is what I need.
After doing a but more work on my 1/1 scale VW Beetle, which looks something like this..
..in preparation for a Rally coming up in a few weeks I got a chance to sit down and do a bit more on the Maru.
So I have the fore and aft decks attached as well as the promenade deck as Hasegawa calls it. The central superstructure is just sitting there in that drawing as I hadn;t done the windows yet. Unfortunately the builders decided to use windows other than porthole which means out with the fine brush and flowing some paint time.
I have to go back then and dry-brush the frames to get them looking right as some of the windows have windows made up of smaller frames and I need to pick out the frames.
That's it for now

Hi Warren!
Just checking MSW - I have not been around here for some time, due to real life demanding most of my time until sometime November; moving - you know what that means - and seeing you new project. Of course I'm in, even though I might not been a frequent commenter for the weeks to come.
Great job so far, and typical Warren speed!! And a subject quite off the beaten path - very nice.
I was wondering how early on you put the wooden decks down, but with the way the decks are installed - a little 'inside' the hull, this apparently was a very smart move!
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan.
Nice to see you back.
I paint the plastic deck first to give the self-adhesive deck something to adhere to. With this model it would have been impossible to apply the wood to the decks after they were installed so everything has been painted and the deck applied before I install the assemblies.
Every project is different.
Cheers Jan
