I just went out and purchased Lindberg's 1:60 scale Shrimp Boat. I plan on giving her the appearance of Forest Gump's "Jenny" shrimper. I'm currently trying to find two figures that will get close to looks and size.
I'm not sure if I should go with 1:58 or 1:64 size figures. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears LOL Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Robert, I choose a kit for its subject not its quality. If there's a choice (if a certain subject is kitted by more manufacturers) quality does become an issue. Italeri's 1/35 PT Boats e.g. are vastly superior to Lindberg's 1/32 one and only a masochist would buy the latter

 .
From what I've seen I think I like 1/64 figures best. I especially like figures 743, 701 and 702. Not much likeness with Forest Gump but I think they could make a suitable crew for a shrimp boat (pictures are a bit small to make a good judgement) :

Arjan - many thanks for sending me this link on the figures. My aim is to have Forest at stern of boat. Dan, his leg amputee Sargeant, would be up on the rigging. Possible 779 for Dan. I'm trying to decide for Forest.
I also have looked up Army military figures around this scale that I can alter for Dan.
Thanks so much for your help and taking the time to supply me with this info. Cheers!

Check the Walthers Model Railroad catalog out for more figures. I think 1/64 is considered "S" Scale. 1/48 is "O" Scale. HO is 1/87 scale.

I'm waiting for my Evergreen .219" styrene tubing to arrive so I can start work on the two beacon towers. The towers that came with kit, measuring 0.20" diameter, are solid and I have no way of running electrical wiring to the lights.
I also am running into a snag with painting my deck gear with Model Expo's Buff color paint. I do not use an airbrush and this paint is incredibly thinned down. I've used three coats and it still has primer bleeding through it. Frustrating. I may just bite the bullet and use Model Master Depot Buff acrylic paint.
I drilled a 1/4" hole through the bottom of hull and through the back of my shadow box frame so I can run the electrical wires to the battery pack that is mounted on the back side of the frame for my diorama.

You could just use the Model Master Depot Buff acrylic paint and then go over it with the Model Expo Buff color paint for the final color ...but really, I would recommend picking up an inexpensive beginner airbrush; I myself resisted the airbrush for years, but once I broke down and tried one, there was no going back. They are a bit of a pain, but the effects possible really are worth it...

Robert,
Really, really nice work you are doing. That new tower is much better then the kit supplied one. Fine attention to the details you accomplishing.

Mark - towers need some touch up but they are coming along. They were easier to make than I anticipated. HaPpY HaLLoWeeN !!!

She's looking really good, Robert - the shapes are coming together nicely, paint is neat and tidy. Are you going to finish the model as a pristine full-hull representation or waterline with weathering? Either way it will be a striking display!

Tim Reynaga - I'm going to apply some very light weathering to the ship. I'm sure the Coast Guard kept the ship tidy, but I've yet to see a ship in the water that does not show some signs of wear from the elements. I will be using, in small amounts, Testors Createfx Rust stain, pastels and a little graphite for my weathering. I'm planning to show her anchored at sea. I'll be using Plaster of Paris ( wife's stash). Water Effects Atlantic Blue acrylic gel and acrylic paint. Thanks for your interest in taking a look. HaPpY HaLLoWeeN !!!

Got a little more work in this week. I finished cutting and installing the railings to the tops of structures. I also did some subtle weathering using powders from Bragdon Enterprises.
I wanted to see how the 3mm Led bright lights would look like and check for fit. The lights are slow flashing but I caught them when they were both lit. The scratch built towers are not complete but I was able to add the two small lights that wre cut from the original forward tower.
Nothing is glued down at this point. I will finish up the towers and then add to 1.8 warm lights to cabins and the Pico sized lights for my port and staarboard lights.

Jan - thank you very much for taking a look and for your positive response. I learned quite a bit while working on my 4th model kit, the Bluenose, which happened to be my 1st wooden kit. I'm hoping I'll have this lightship finished before the end of the year.
My next project will be creating Forest Gump's "Jenny" from the Lindberg's 1:60 Shrimp Boat. This will give me a chance to work on my weathering skills. I then have Model Shipways wooden 1:16 HMS Bounty Launch to teach me framing and planking skills. I wish to say 'Thanks' to all of the talented people in sites like this who have helped me get to this point in model building. Cheers !!!

Robert,
Sweet! Adding that light to the mast was a wonderful idea. The superstructure looks very detailed and the paint work really does make structure stand out.

Nice, Robert!
I know from experience what a pain installing working features such as lights on a model can be, but they really do bring it to life!

My light ship is coming along. I've been able to add all of the deck parts except for the three boats and their davits. Here's a photo of my progress.

Hey Robert,
Your Nantucket lightship has turned into a sharp, clean build! Good luck with the boats & davits; here's a picture of the davit arrangement on the similar Chesapeake lightship you might find useful:
