Scalemodel World is getting close, and I start another build, is this modeller slightly mad? I'll leave that up to you guys.

There is method in my madness, I have been playing with one of the Micro-Mir 1/350 K class steam powered submarine, which is quite a beast for it's time, and a disastrous failure. And I wanted something to counterpoint it's size. Rummaging through the loft I could not find the little resin WW1 U boat I was looking for, but found this instead.

This is the kit, and a small update set from WEM.

The lower hull and diving planes.

The hull assembled, with the K class in the background.

https://i.imgur.com/TdZAoTt.jpg

The parts for the impeller.

WEM do supply indidual blades on the etch, but for this build the kit parts are going to suffice.

Pinated and washed, they will look fine.

The sail assembled and fitted.

Masts, and some etched hatches.

Sprayed Citadel Chaos Black.

Next job, gloss & decals.

Cheers

Si

Si,

Nice and easy build, plan on weathering her up or make her look like she was just launch?

By the look of that box it must have sitting on the bottom of the stash.

Hi Mark,

She is being built fresh out of the yard, have studied a fair few pics of SSNs and the weathering is very subtle, I might have a go at that, along with a base showing the boat running on the surface.

This one was bought when the kit came out, and that is quite a few years back, and until yesterday, I hadn't had the motivation to build her.

Thanks for looking in.

Onwards and upwards.

A coat of gloss for the decals to sit on.

The decals in place, more than I am used to on most surface vessels, and she has a name.

The deck railings fitted.

I could not find any pictures clearly showing this feature, It appears they are not always used even when the boat is alongside the jetty.

Matt coat applied and railings painted, not sure if that is correct for an SSN but it modern health & safety I would thing the stantions would be a contrasting colour to the hull.

The impeller painted and a wash on to bring out the blades.

detailing on the masts started.

A couple of comparison shots with the K class, The K is longer, but does not have the beam or depth of the SSN.

Cheers

Si

Si,

Nice finish. I always thought those boats were larger than pre-nuke boats.

Nice boat, Si! It is fun to just get one done quickly once in a while, isn't it?!

Not quite finished Mark,

A bit of detail painting to do yet, and of course the Ensign to hoist (The K needs rigging too).

The K class were the sort of damn fool idea us Brits are excel at. The design was totally impractical, max safe depth 200ft, only eight bulkheads inside the pressure hull, and with the boat 339ft long, and some parts of the North Sea less the 100 feet deep, you did not want to put a big down angle on the bow! also quickest "crash" dive taking about 20 mins.

I am considering getting another kit, and doing a job on it, opening up the deck mounted Torpedo tubes, replacing the kit guns etc.

Thanks for looking in.

Cheers

Si

Thanks Tim,

Will admit it was a bit of a panic job, really to counterpoint how big the K is. (I was looking for a little resin job of a WW1 u boat to go for a like for like comparison of size - small boxes can be "tricky" to find sometimes) - Still I think this works.

It is a nice little kit, and as you say it is fun, with all the big builds going on just to put something together out of the box.

Thanks for looking in Mate.

Cheers

Si

a bit of detail painting and the ensign & nameplates to go on the sail.

Well, this is a "blink and you miss it" build, Si.

Very nice I must say and interesting to see it up against the K class. Odd boats that they were.

Nearly Russ,

Finishing touches went on today, will post them later. I did want another submarine to give comparison to how large the K is.

Thanks for looking inmate, much appreciated as always.

I said this was going to be quick.

Detail painting on the masts and name plate in place.

Colours hoisted.

Commissioned.

I will add a couple of shots of the K class to this thread when I have put the finishing touches on her.

Cheers

Si

Si,

Really sweet looking sub. I like the grey squares on the bow, reminds me of 20 thousand leagues under the sea. Did they serve a real purpose?

Hi Mark,

I believe they are sensors for the bow mounted sonar array. I can find no photographic evidence that these are accurate, but they do liven the look of the boat up a bit.

Thanks for looking in, and your kind comments.

Cheers

Si.

That's a nice looking submarine, Si. The safety rails and flags are just enough extra to add interest without breaking the sleek lines of the little sub. Nicely done!

Thank you Tim,

I did enjoy this little build, and I think along with the type XXI will nicely counterpoint the size and oddity of the K class.

Thanks for looking in.

As it was the reason for building the SSN, here is the completed K class.

and with the Turbulent.

The K class is the micro-mir kit, a bit basic and the etch is a little crude, but still buildable.

Likewise mate!

Great looking subs BTW.

Great to see the RN getting some more love in styrene for their subs.

Si,

Your K-Class submarine build looks great. It sure is strange to see a submarine with funnels sticking out the deck. Even though the K-Class is longer than the Trafalger class I bet she was very cramp for space compared to the Trafalger.
