From what I've read, the British armed forces have had a devil of a time getting recruits. Perhaps the shortage of manpower can account in some way for this.
Of course, the Royal Navy without an "HMS Ark Royal" sounds about as logical as the US Navy without a "USS Enterprise".

That really is a shame. As m60a3 says it's like the USN without a Enterprise. Of course the Big E is getting a little old, maybe they're be doing it to her one day.

I also find it interesting that the Royal Navy has only 2 carriers, for some reason I've just always assumed they'd have more. Its a shame, what they are doing.
BTW-- How many carriers do the US have?

A few tears ago, while on a training course at HMS Excellent, I saw a cartoon carrying the text:
I've got bad news for you 'orrible lot - the Navy is bringing back flogging:
They're flogging Endurance, Ark Royal.....................

12 super carriers, but I think we also have some smaller ones too for the Marines. Not sure about that though.

Wouldn't that leave the UK with two more, not one, carrier? Also, aren't they going to name the replacement CVF Ark Royal? It would be a shame to discontinue with a proud name. Just like the Enterprise. It's replacement, CVNX-1/CVX-78, had better be named Enterprise!

That's a real shame, it really is. I hope the USN doesn't go with the wrong crowd and do the same thing.....

I guess you guys ought to ditch the song that Brictania rules the waves. You're closing down shop faster than the US Army is.

The only cannon we still have left in service are on board HMS Victory, and if we get rid of many more ships we have to dig her out of dry-dock :-)

I think there is an element of the media blowing things out of proportion here, the Royal Navy has three carriers Invincible, Illustrious and Ark Royal, but we only have 2 active airwings.
It has been the norm for many years to have only 2 carriers active at any one time, with the third carrier undergoing overhaul or laid up but able to be brought back into service at short notice.
Invincible is presently with the fleet having had a major overhaul a couple of years ago, Illustrious is about to complete her latest overhaul, and will then rejoin the fleet, so its Ark Royal's turn therefore to go into her dormant phase. But of course this doesn't make 'headline grabbing' news.
Incidentally the USN has a similar policy with more carriers than airwings and active and inactive periods for all vessels.
Also it is widely rumoured that the 2 new CVF carriers for the Royal Navy will be named 'HMS Queen Elizabeth II' and 'HMS Duke of Edinburgh' now that is a travesty, I'm not anti-Royal but there are loads of traditional carrier names not currently in use.
My vote is for 'Eagle' & 'Ark Royal' now that would be harking back to the good old days.
Happy modelling

There was a rumour a few years ago that a new carrier was to be named Glorious, which would have been good as a previous Glorious gave it's name to our local Sea-cadet unit, where I used to be a PO drill-pig and small-arms instructor.
