Well I said she was bigger than Mikasa!

I built the Mikasa first to get the feel of the scale before tackling this project, that project went better than I expected, so on with something more complex.

The Kit.

The aftermarket.

I bought the kit second hand, the Trumpeter upgrade was a surprise extra I found when I opened the box. Some of the Veteran sets are laziness on my part, I could have added scratchbuilt detail to the 4.1" mounts, 37mm guns, searchlights etc, but the Veteran parts are very nice.

The hull on the bench, it only just fits.

The first parts fitted, the hull stiffeners.

The separate bow sections.

Fitted in place.

Not the best fit, but nothing some filler cannot cure.

There is a slight step, a little more sanding will sort.

The Pontos set provides very nice grills for the seachests & overboard discharges. chain drilling and cutting started.

The first parts fitted.

These will be backed with plasticard sprayed with red primer.

still drilling and fitting.

Another update after the weekend.

Cheers

Si

well, I know you said it's a topic that's been done before Si, and it's the bigger of biggness in scales, but I hadn't expected you to bring the topic chosen and the scale together... well played Sir, well played

Watching with interest... and a little bit of envy (maybe some drool too)

PS. You wanna get that apostrophe after "ons" removed from the title otherwise the email notifications won't work

Wow, Si, what a good choice! I've been fooling around with BIG 1/200 scale for the first time lately (even though mine is only a destroyer), which has given me some appreciation for what you are taking on here. I can't wait to watch you tame this monster!

Si,

That is one big model to display. I know the kit and goodies weren't cheap but having to build a room to display it that would be a deal breaker for me....LOL.

Looking forward to seeing you do your magic on this build.

Hi Russ,

Welcome aboard.

After reading Iain Ballantyne's "Killing the Bismarck" and Burkard Von Mullenheim-Rechburg's "Battleship Bismarck - A survivor's story" back to back I have developed somewhat of an interest in the ship, and this kit just had to be done.

I will be honest, I sort of fell in love with the scale building the Mikasa.

Will drop the moderators aline and get the title fixed, thanks mate.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

welcome aboard.

Some of what I am learning watching your 1/200th build I am sure will come in handy on this bad boy.

He is way more complex than Mikasa, and I am intending on open a few areas up and adding a bit of extra detail. (too tempting when I have the references).

Cheers

Si

Hi Mark

Welcome aboard.

I did a lot of thinking before I bought the kit, I have bought the extras for the last few years she has sat in the stash.

As for displaying / storing him, I have two - two and half years to think about that

For the time being I am going to kick that problem into the long grass and concentrate on enjoying the build

Cheers

Hi Rory,

Welcome aboard.

He (The Kreigsmarine followed the Kaiserliche Marine's tradition of referring to their ships as "He") certainly is a monster, looking at the hull on the bench is a wee bit scary.

Whow Si now I know what you did with the money from your life insurance - this was quite an investment. I will watch your build carefully for sure for this most renown ship of the german Kriegsmarine

Si,

fantastic choice all along. No question I am in and really keen on watching you - and I'm really interested to see what you think of this kit and aftermarket as compared to your earlier 1/350 Bismarck with the Pontos, which was a splendid build, by the way!
And now your new shipyard really comes to shine, great place, I wish I had the room, 1/200 would certainly be my scale!

Cheers

Welcome aboard Thomas,

It has been quite an investment, the aftermarket I have bought in the two and a half years since I bought the kit. But I am lookiung at about the same time to get this model built, so it will still be value for money.

Glad to have you along for the ride, and keeping me on the straight and narrow.

Cheers

Welcome aboard Jan,

Comparisons are already springing to mind, cutting out the overboard discharges / seachest screens was bigger job, not only due to the size, but the hull moulding is so much thicker.

The mouldings are very good, although there are a few areas that will need extra attention If Trumpeter have panto-graphed this down for their up-coming 1/350th kit it will be very good indeed.

Glad to have you along for the ride.

Cheers.

Progress since the last update.

The holes for the overboard discharges/ sea-chest cut out on the starboard side.

The holes will need to backed to avoid a see through look, very little will be able to seen, so some suitably painted plasticard and plastic strip.

Building the backing.

A bit of filler to make sure no light get through.

A boxed in, and a quick squirt of Halford's red primer to make sure no bare plastic is visible.

The etched grills added.

Next job, drilling out the wholes for the iron ladders and mounts for boat booms down the side of the hull.

Cheers

Si

The little things one must do that end up being a great finish, nice work with the installation.

Nice work so far, Si! It is especially fitting to start with the sea chests since (according to the Germans at least) the Bismarck was ultimately scuttled by opening the seacocks...
