I airbrush my basic tan then dry brush a darker color in a few areas.  You might try using a wash, just go real easy so you don't melt plastic and lose plank detail (did that once).  Takes a lot of practice and most of the time I jst paint it, let it set up for a day and then rub my grubby fingers over a few areas

also consider how big the ship is and what it would look like if you were standing on the ship

JUst read something in Fine scale MOdeler (Sept 04 issue) what a guy that just built a 700 scale Bismarck did with his wooden deck.  Used a real small drafting pencil and scribed the plank lines with it.  Really brings out the detail  gona check that out as I build 350 scale, I figure it might be a little easier
