Started the kit the other night. Got the modelbrass PE set and it is fantastic. Got an e-mail for the guy that does the periscope and he is out and will email when he has some more.

My U-Boot build.

Steve I am not able to link to your site. The link is not working and you have no pic just a red X. I'm looking forward to seeing your build. I'm waiting for some PE myself. And some space to spread it out!

OK, just got the side vents done (opened and added the braces) and added pictures.

Think I'll do something different and open the bottom two torpedo doors.

I ordered one of those beauties a couple months ago...still waiting...it's on back order..they are expecting it into their shop any day now. hey I'm saving $20 on the kit. I'll set it aside for a while..like the vent opening and looks like that brass kit really will enhace. keep the pics coming...you are definitely giving me inspiration

1. for the front vent and rear vent, did you cut entire area out and drop in the Modelbrass replacement parts?
2. When you did the side vents, did you just cut a whole line of them out and then use styrene to remake vents, or did you drill each vent out separately?

Steve,

1. Yes

2. The small vent hole I ground down the back of the hull till it was paper thin or cut through then opened them up.

The long vent above the ballast tanks was scored and remove as one piece. I then put styrene strips on the interior to replicate the framing.

Thanks I'll mimic that as it is a hell of a lot less time consuming then drilling out each and every whole.

Where did you get your Modelbrass set, and what did you pay including shipping and handling? Great Models lists it for 36 but they want $7 to ship it, and I have learned with them that listing doesn't mean they have it.

Got mine from the source.

http://www.modelbrass.com/revell_viicUSA.htm

Cost is almost as much as the kit $40 + shipping.

I won't deal with great models. See here for my experience with them.

My only complaint about Great Models is they frequently list tons of stuff they don't actually have in stock. So a month after you order it they finally ship it. Like companies that have what they say They can always list it as to be ordered. Well, I 'll have to wait a couple of weeks until after my financial situation shakes down here. Probably go with Great Models as it is $4 cheaper it seems only Great Models carries it. Maybe order a couple paints and something else to make the $7 shipping charge worth it.

I'll bet it will be back ordered. Squadron has it as a future item.

Thanks, I'll be placing my order with them tomorrow! I'll ask about the Nimitz while I'm at it. I'll bet they just got them in yesterday or today.

Steve,
Thanks for the tip, $38 sounds like the best price I have heard for this model.

Salt...................Baby.................. Any more progress pics on this jewell. Still awiting for Squadron to get the brass set in stock. They also have the CMK figures so I figure to make one order and get it all dones at once. Been resisting getting in there and drilling, but want to make sure I have everything I need before I get going. Sure hate to cut a bunch of stuff and then find out Modellbrass went belly up and there are no more sets available.

Got my brass set and figures from that Mickster fellow on the internet. I messaged him and made a bulk purchase offer and ended up getting the stuff in two days which is before Squadron got a restock and saved $2. Finishing up some stuff now and then will probably start on her in November. Those props sure look nice, heard someone had a set of the periscopes and gun tubes done up in turned metal. No one has done the railings yet, I guess if you want those you have to make 'em yourself. I think I'll just stick to what I have now

HOUSHINYA does the periscopes but he is out of stock and looking for another manufacture. Saw some online at on of the hobby shops but forget which one.

My props came in today, pretty good ordered on Tuesday and received on Thursday.

Check on the Modelship net. There is a guy named Steve Nutall (I think) that has been making gun tubes for a lot of the battleship kits. He was thinking about doing a set of stuff for the sub.
