Does anyone know of any availible models of a WWII Sub Chaser that was used in the Pacific? I recently found out that both my grandpas served on these boats during the war. I've looked on a number of model websites, but have found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you check out http://www.squadron.com you can do a search in their ship models section and find a lot to choose some. I know for a fact they sell WWII Destroyer Escorts (DE's), Destroyers (DD's) and Light Cruisers (CL). Perhaps you'll find what your looking for.

I serched the list of warships on Squadron.com twice, but didn't see any sub chasers. I think I'll try looking for some partol craft too, as some sub chasers were converted for that duty. But, for now I think I'll check some of the scratchbuilding fourms. (and see if I can get promoted from a 'base visitor' :-) )

Yodaman,
As you have probably noted we don't have a huge compliment of ship builders here yet. Will be working on it in the future though as both my father and stepfather served on US naval ships in WWII (the same one in fact) so I have a certain affinity to the subject like you.

So...in the meantime you might try posting your question on www.SteelNavy.com as they are probably one of the bigger naval forums around the net.

Hope that helps. And for clarificaion which class is a sub-chaser? I always thought that meant a destroyer. Is it a class on it's own? I guess cruisers were equiped to go after subs too though. Also if you know the names of the ships they served on that will help (posting on SteelNavy that is).

Oh....and I am a huge SW fan also. One of my first sites was a SW site in 1995. Sadly...it is no more.

Gee.... Is it that obvious that I'm a Star Wars fan? Uh, what class of sub chaser? All my grandpa told me was that the ship he was on had the designation 'SC-636', and that my other grandpa was on 'SC-700' or 'SC-701'. I've found a website with pictures of these ships at http://www.navsource.org/archives/12/15idx.htm
I love this site and think it's one of the best modeling sites on the web!!!

Yoda, being a Navy man myself, and quite interested in WWII Naval History, I've read a lot of books on the subject. I can quite honestly say that I have never come across the Submarine Chaser in any of the books I've read. This is quite interesting. I'm going to have to do a little research on this subject. Thanks for opening my eyes to this new aspect of sub warfare.

Very interesting stuff. I too had no idea that class ship was used.

Glencoe reissued a WWI sub chaser back in the mid-90s, I have a semi completed one here. The number on it is AV SC96 and it may be an old Renwal or Lindberg reissue. I know this isn't a WW2 kit, but at least it's a start.

Thanks guys!!! I kind of expected that I'd have to do some scratchbuilding anyway. My grandpa had several amusing stories about being on one of those boats. (including one that would make an Enviormental Protection Agency official cringe...) He said he'd been in only one larger scale battle, and had only one encounter with a sub. For that he was glad. Modelbuilding has created a growing interest in history for me, so it's always fun to learn something new.

I did a search for Glencoe Models; I found their web address, but when I try to go to the site it tells me it's not there... I did find some other webstores that had the product listed, but none in stock. I guess I'll widen the search.
Coooool, I'm a Private now... no more cheesy 'Base Visitor' for me!

Glencoe Models is a re-boxer and did a lot of the old Strombecker space craft, including the von Braun space stuff. The kit is in the ever popular 1/74 scale and is kit # 07301, I do have the remnants of one of the kits.

Colonel Sabot, I gotta ask. Are you some kind of model collector? You seem to know something about every model kit someone has a question about. My own specialty is in Star Wars kits, but my own stockpile of unbuilt models is about 15. My dad, he's the space model collector... (he's gonna build 'em someday too!)

I truly intend to build each kit that I purchase. Sometimes my interests shift, but I have always been a sci-fi and armor modeler. I do enjoy the occasional 1/48 scale aircraft and I like to find kits that I had as a kid and built with my dad.

Ebay is a great place to find older kits, although the prices on some have started to go through the roof. But at least they are available. For the price of postage ($4-5 in the US), I'll send you the sub chaser I have. I will check to see if all parts are there, but I bought it in Alabama several years ago and that was 3 moves ago.

You'd really sell me you subchaser model? I'd have to offer you more that 5 bucks for it though. I am interested in it. If there's anything you're looking for that I can help you find, let me know.

I also intend to put together all the model kits that I have purchased, but I'm waiting for when I get my first airbrush. (hopefully it'll be soon!) I've seen the huge difference in the quality of the finish that can be achieved with airbrushing, so I'm reluctant to assemble some models that I really want to look good using the standard method.

I still have one of the first model that I built; it was some kind of Chevy that I slapped together in about two hours. Ha-ha. I just put some gloss blue paint on the seats and snapped everything together - no glue! One of the headlights fell out a long time ago, but I like to keep it around to see how far my skills have improved...

Good for you, some of my first kits would grab big bucks on eBay if I still had them. All of the Aurora Prehistoric Scenes dinosaur kits that I had and some of the earlier sci-fi kits that were scarificed to the BB gun and fire cracker gods. It makes my heart sink

You are welcome to the sub chaser, at least you'd finish it and for a good cause. It has been started but should be complete, but the box suffers from PCS syndrome. It's been transported by movers so much that some of the pieces are probably broken, but at least it will give you a start instead of scratchbuilding one.

Let me know if you still want this kit, my wife wants me to start rotating the stock and all the overflow kits are getting put back into the garage. Basically keeping modern armor kits and WW2 allied armor in the house (along with the Fine Molds X-Wings and a few Gundam kits for the kids).

Yeah, I'll still take the kit if you've still got it. You can send me a PM, or I can send you one with my e-mail.
The spring yard work is starting to pick up... so I'll be able to afford it. (as opposed to taking a loan from my parents... ) Thanks!

Richard,
Note that you've found a thread from 10 years ago. I checked YodaMan's profile (the button under his name), and he hasn't checked this site since 2009.
Sounds like you've got something cool though. Any pictures?
I knew what a subchaser was because my dad belongs to the Marine Navigation and Training organization (MANATRA) in Chicago who used SC 1281 as MANATRA I during the 1960's, then ran ex-USCGC McLean as MANATRA II, and currently ex yard patrol boat YP-671.
See THIS nifty entry on SC 1281 from Bowling Green State University. The flag painted on the Manatra's stack indicates that there is a doctor on board, because several of the club's captains were doctors by day.
Cheers!
