Well,

My mid-war Gato (aka Lionfish) has been primed and she's in her final form. (I'll have photos later this evening) and she'll be given her first coat in the morning. However, I have both MM's neutral gray and a bottle of Floquil neutral gray. Niether are close in the same hue. The Floquil is much darker and the MM is lighter and has a (for lack of a better description) a greenish tone to it.

So, my question is, which one would be closer to the correct color. I'm leaning toward the Floquil on the basis that I recall at one time they were tauted as the most accurate.

Which would you guys use?

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

Ahoy Steve me mate!
From the pictures that I have seen of the real ship, the gray looked realy light. Almost whitish! So when I painted my Lionfish, I chose to use MM's Light ghost gray, then it looked a little dark. So I lightened it up by adding flat white to it. Just a bit! You might think about adding white to your nutral gray. If the MM nut gray looks greenish, then I would go with he Floqil. Here is a pic of mine if that may help.

I think, I'll use...the MM. However, after triple Z's comments, I think I might make a couple of color chips and send them to Frank (the Narwhal vet) and ask him which he thinks is closer.

I know this was a nebulous question, I thought about snapping a photo of the two and post them rather than try to describe them.

Triple Z, I do plan to shadow it. I am firm believer in that for the same reasons...and not just ships either

Garry...yo ho ho and a bottle of Jack :-)

Ok...back to work.

untill someone comes along who knows what they are talking about, my advice is to use whatever looks better to you[quote]

Jonathan, it is best to choose your words carefully before you type. This way you don't offend others, your words above are suggestive.

You could check out The Ship Camouflage website. They have color chips, the paint and info on paint schemes of various ships, including submarines of WWII.

Here's what I found on submarines:

http://www.shipcamouflage.com/ships2_6_42_table_of_contents.htm

You might even be able to contact someone there who could tell you what you could use to subsitute for their paints.

Hope this helps. It's a very interesting site with photos too.

Take Care,

Jess

Garry I think he posted at the same time as you. He didn't see your reply. Some just post something when they have no info to build #'s. Don't take offense.
