(this is copied fromt he Campaigns area...I'm lazy! :-) )

all right, my 1/700 scale Los Angeles class submarine is finished. I based my build on what I have seen in photos with only the main periscope up.

I added a PE screw to a otherwise OOB DML kit. The colors are scale black above and a custom mix of insignia red and black for the lower hull. I made the base myself, including all the mistakes! :-)

As the last photo shows, I carved out the name-plate from the supplied kit to add to the base and then painted it black with a dry-brushing of Tamiya Copper. Lookes better in real life!

Now to the LaFayette class sub!

Well executed kit, but your base for it is truely first class.

Hiya Skipper,

Thanks for the note over on the Campaign area. I was going to give it a flat coat, but considering the size of the 1/700 kits and the way I set up the base, it actually looks better glossed. I am not sure if it is because it makes it "feel" covered with water or something to that effect, but it definately looks better than with a flat-coat.

What is the surface of a real submarine like? I would imagine it is closer to a gloss smooth than a flat to help reduce possible turbulance...

Hi Jacques!

Most part of the hull will be dull or semi-gloss. The areas with anti-skid paint are also dull (or matt if you prefer). I only sugested the dull coat since you have your boat on blocks (one of the two "professional ways" to present the models) and the dull would look good!
And you're working at a small scale the shining looks a little out of scale - and since you used scaled black...
But if you'll prefer it gloss, ok!
The main thing is that you had fun and built a good looking SSN LA Class
