Howdy All,

After the success of past Q & A exchange threads here at the big 'A', I thought I'd start one up again regarding Warships specifically. The idea (like last time) is to create a string of trivia style questions where the member who answers the question is then the one who comes up with the next trivia question, and so on, and so on....
I don't know about all of you, but even when I couldn't answer the question that was posed (which was a decent amount of the time ) I still got a big kick out of reading the answers, and felt like I profited a great deal by reading and learning from our most learned membership.

SO......to start this thing off (for those interested), I will begin with a question regarding Carriers, since the Carrier Campaign is coming up. But don't worry, it's an easy one.
Here it goes;

{.....Alex Trebeck picks up the card to read the question.......}

"The WW II aircraft carrier, commonly known as the U.S.S. Yorktown was originally commissioned with what name?? And please remember to phrase your answer like a question....... ....."

Thx for playin'.

Tread.

PostScript: I'm thinking about starting up other 'JEOPARDY!' based threads on the other Forum's if you guys and gals enjoy this one.........

PostPostScript: I am almost tempted to red flag my friend Rodger from the game.......the bugger has way too many answers tucked away........

.....just kiddin' ya Rog......

Dave got it in 20 minutes, and I'm not even sure I would have had the answer. I think I'll bow to Dave's mastery.

Hurry up and post one Dave, I can't wait.

I'm sorry Treadhead but remember, but you must frame your answer in the form of a question. :-)

An easy one. Lee's flagship at the 2nd battle of Guadalcanal was the USS Washington. What was the other battleship there, and what happened to her in the battle?

What was the USS South Dakota and why did she lose power at the begining of the battle?

Actually it was the Third Battle of Savo Island. The Washington sunk the Kirishima and the S.Dak lost electrical power and was hit by numerous rounds from the Japanese.

Was it the South Dakota or the North Carolina. I thought the SD was in the Atlantic at the time working with the Brits. If it was the SD then whre was the NC at this time? Oh and trivia (easy) what was the NC's nickname?

"....What was the USS South Dakota...."

A Battleship.

"......why did she lose power at the begining of the battle...."

Because of some previous problems someone locked down the main circuit breakers.

Either that, or bad luck.

Now I have a new one as well. Still to do with Battleships, but nothing to do with Savo Island or Ironbottom Sound (?).

As most of you know, Batleships were named after States of the Union.....what is the only Battleship not named after a State?
Bonus points for the designator.

And just as a hint, it's a number between 1 and 10...... ;-)

Tread.

I have a couple of other Battleship questions.....

What is USS Kearsarge BB-5.

This ship was named for the USN ship that sank the Confederate raider CSS Alabama, which became the name for BB-8.

Blaster, North Carolina, nicknamed Showboat was in the Pacific but had been torpedoed a couple months before. The So Dak class ship you might be thinking of was the USS Massachusetts.

Oh, and Chief, I always have heard of this battle referred to 2nd Guadalcanal, after the 1st battle of November 13th. Technically I suppose it could still be called 3rd Savo.

I'm sure Dave or Chief will jump all over this one.

This ship stared out as a battleship being built in Great Britain for a South American country. The RN confiscated her and rebuilt her into an aircraft carrier. She was sunk in WWII.

No Tread, Furious was a "light battlecruiser" and I'm pretty sure she survived WWII.

What was Agincourt (BB)? I know she was being built for one of the SouthAmerica countries and comandeered for British use during WW 1after Turkey ended up owning her at war's beginning. As to A/C's I only show 3 converted the Furious, Glorious and Courageous. Alll from Battlecrusiers. Everything else is said to be planned as an A/C no mention of anything being destined for South America. I consulted 2 reference books, so you got me on this one I think

OK, a hint. The ship was going to be the Chilean BB Almirante Cochrane. Think of the line from the poem "Old Ironsides", 'the harpies of the shore shall pluck the ______ from the sea.'

What is the Eagle??? Just taking a stab in the dark here...

If so I got a real easy question...

What ship was the first to fire her 16 inch guns in WWII and coincidentally the last ship to fire her 16 inch guns in WWII.

What is the USS Massachusetts, Big Mamie?

Another BB question, what is possibly the only battleship to torpedo another in WWII? I say possibly because there is some doubt that the "fish" hit.
