Guys
in what can only be described as a moment of temporary insanity I went into my Lhs yesterday and came out clutching the Revell 1:72 U-boat. Knowing that some of you have already built this rather large kit I was wondering if there were any pitfalls to be aware of and what was available in aftermarket goodies?

I got my sub a few months ago. When I got home, I found the the front edge of the hull is broken. The packing is a poor. You might want to have a quick check on the hull.

There are plenty of aftermarts. Squadron and Great Web Store offer quite bit of aftermarts for this sub. For my sub, I have invested in Eduard PE and CMK torpedo bay.

It would be interesting if someone would build this sub with all the CMK internal bays.

Peter,

I haven't built mine yet, but I recall some of the other guys mentioning that the torpedo tube doors require backing due to a poor fit. Other than that, I haven't really heard of any other complaints.

Argrillion, I hadn't had a chance to mention this earlier, but I really like the way your Kilo came out.

Take care guys

Peter

The VIIc is a nice kit to build, without major fit issues or flash.
The only thing which needs a bit attention are as mentionned the forward torpedo doors which don't seem to fit just right.

If you want to really make your sub look realistic, you can open up all the floodholes in the hull and on the deck. It's a lot of work (good excuse to finally buy that Dremel tool) but it makes a lot of difference.
There is some Pe stuff available, but in fact the kit looks superb out of the box (except for maybe the deckgun and aft machine gun which look both a bit simplistic compared to the amount of detail on the hull.

She is worth every penny and every centimeter of space she'll need in the house...

have fun building and keep us posted on your progress.

Peter also bought my VIIC today. Very nice kit , also got talked into a wooden deck by Nautilus Models and some decals with cammo colors and patterns for 15 boats. - Cheyenne

There's a ton of aftermarket stuff for the Revell U-boat. Eduard and WhiteEnsign both do PE sets, which apparently don't have much duplication. WEM also do resin torpedoes and loading rigs IIRC. Czech Master now have control, engine and torpedo room resin sets, with a wardroom to follow. There is also a resin set for the top of the pressure hull visible through the deck, but can't remember who makes it or if it's available this side of the pond...

Here you go, thanks to google:

Haven't bought my boat yet - need to do some serious saving first to get all the above goodies as well!

Oh and I should really also finish my current project, a 1/72 Flower Class corvette. Here's a link to some old photos of the build, it's a lot further along now (after 18 months she's getting close to completion...)

I'll post some more photos of her soon.

Must get a signature too I suppose ...

Thanks Steve for your compliments. Your subs are as good as mine. Are you going to open-up your u-boat for CMK internals?

I don't think that I will. I thought that the detail was fine as it it is and for me, it would be too much to sink into a single kit. So, I'll more than likely build it as straight from the box Not only that, I seem to have problems with photo etch....can never make it work.

Take care

Guys
When you say "watch out for the torpedo tube doors " is that building with them shut or open? I'm tempted to build mine open and have a couple of torpedo's comng out.

Pete,

I recall Martin saying that it was in the closed position that there was a problem.

I plan to do mine open...I think it just looks cooler that way....

Ciao
