Attention on deck! All those who completed the DDD Campaign please read the following...
At the beginning of the DDD Campaign (actually before it kicked off) our good friend "CoB" took it upon himself to send me several items for use as part of the Campaign. Included are four ball caps and four "challenge coins," all of which will be named once photo's are posted by Steve - 95Bravo...(God bless him for helping me) in the next day or so.
I wasn't really sure how to go about giving these items out, and I certainly don't want CoB's goodwill gesture to go unfinished or unnoticed, so what I plan to do is simply pick names from a hat from among those who actually completed the Campaign.
I will notify the "winners" by updating (editing) the post. The random order in which I pick the names (you'll have to trust me on this) will dictate who gets to choose what item....first name picked will get first choice, and so on. I will take care of any shipping costs.
Thanks again guys for a successful campaign!

What an awesome gesture!!
You might want to get the CoB to explain about what a challenge coin is and how it works for those not familiar with it.

If the "Challenge Coins" in the Navy work the same as they do in the Army, basically, if you have one that is significant to your unit, you are to have it with you at all times. If you are asked to show it, i.e. "challenged," and do not have it, you are expected to buy the one who challenged you a drink.
I've also seen them given out for various reasons, as awards, for good deeds, etc.
I received one from the FORSCOM commander ( a four-star General) back in 1986 for driving two hours to deliver jungle fatigues to him from Ft. Benning, for a spur of the moment trip to Panama. I'm sure there are countless other reasons people get them. They have become real collector items.
Can anyone else add to this explanation?

That's the way I remember it, with one addition. Should the person being challenged actually produce his coin, then the person MAKING the challenge gets the opportunity to buy.
Coins have proliferated over the last 10-15 years to the extent that they are getting made not just for units, but for "events" as well as various commanders.
I visited with a friend who had several cases of them in his office (well over 200) and he said they represented way less than half his collection.
Seems to have lost the significance at that point.
But I do keep my Engineer Regimental Coin with me at all times.
ESSAYONS!

Hi Guys,
Yes the challenge coins work the same way as several of you described them. The CO and Cob/CMC often hand them out to a crewmember to recognize a special accomplishment. In addition, they are given to visitors as a memento of their time onboard.
Sorry I haven't been around much. Part of my job is to ride the boats for a week or so before they deploy to make sure the crew are trained and ready to go. It's been pretty hectic lately. I am very impressed with the quality and variety of boats you all completed. BZ!

COB, those are some sweet items that you donated. whatever one I should receive, that puppy is going into a case next to the subs. I really appreciate what you did for DDD. I hope that since DDD2 will be a little longer, it will allow you to participate in it.
Thanks again
Steve
